I was looking forward to this book hoping it would be a collection of vintage burlesque posters from the 50's, 60's and 70's. Unfortunately the older posters only take up about a third of the book. About a quarter is taken up with photos of dancers from the past. The rest, the majority, is of current burlesque-type poster designs from contemporary illustrators. I had no interest in any of the newer material and since the vintage posters were only about a third of the book decided to pass on it. For those looking for anything on vintage burlesque material this will be a purchase, but for those expecting more you might be disappointed. The actual printing and reproduction quality is good.

I found this book really useful. Plenty of inspiration if you are a performer or promoter. Nice to see people as Phyllis Dixey mentioned for once.

This books fills a gap in theatre history as it is the first book on burlesque theatre posters design.
From the 1940's to the early 1960's tableau shows toured Britain. These were variety shows with a nude or simi -nude tableaux.
Some of the shows has fan dancers such as Denise Vane and Phyllis Dixey. The shows did not stop the decline of the British variety theatres which were closing in large numbers during this time. One of the promoters of the tableau shows was Paul Raymond who later opened the successful Raymond Revuebar Theatre in London.

The world famous Windmill Theatre has an illustration of a poster and theatre programme in the book. This was London's first non-stop revue theatre which became a national institution . For the closure in 1964, the BBC filmed the last night for the television programme ,Panorama.

The book mentions such well known U.S. artistes as Lilli St.Cyr, Tempese Storm plus other artistes.

Perhaps the great country for the art of burlesque is France .The book has a illustration from a poster from the Follies -Bergere. The Crazy House in Paris has no poster or other art work illustrated.

The recent interest in burlesque is not forgotten with many illustrations of posters from Britain,Canada. Japan,Switzerland and the United States.
This is a book worth having for the lover of burlesque and revue and is good value for the money.
