Burley Piccolo Bike Trailer

The Burley Piccolo Bike Trailer enables you to turn an adult bike into a tandem ride, so that kids from 4 to 10 years old can keep up on the road and learn to bike safely, with adult guidance. The Piccolo features a versatile 7-speed twist grip shifter, adjusts easily for growing children, and offers great stability with Burley's patented aluminum ball-bearing guided hitch that securely mounts to the included Burley rear rack. And, when you're child's ready to bike independently you can pair the Piccolo with Burley's new Burley Plus (sold separately) handlebar front wheel system to transform the Piccolo into a full-on bike.

A Fully Featured Tandem Riding Experience

Thanks to its lightweight aluminum frame, the Piccolo is lightweight and solid. Unlike most bike trailers, the Piccolo features a 7-speed drivetrain with twist shifters that encourages kids to learn how to manage up and down hill riding. The 20-inch wheel rolls smoothly and can keep up with the adult rider's pace.

  • Lightweight aluminum frame
  • 20-inch wheel for smooth rolling
  • 7-speed twist grip shifter
Innovative Burley Patented Hitch System
The Piccolo Bike Trailer attaches directly to the perpendicular hitch mounted on the rear rack of the adult bike.

While most bike trailers attach to the adult bike's seat post, the Piccole frame attaches to the included Burley rack. This system connects the trailer directly over the adult bike's rear axle for stable in-line handling between the adult and child rider.

The hitch mount secures directly to the top of the rack with a double locking mechanism for extra security. The hitch system features ball-bearing guided pivots to provide shimmy-free mounting. The hitch itself sits perpendicular to the ground, providing superior handling and stability overall.

  • Stable and snug in-line handling with over-axle pivot attachment
  • Ball-bearing guided pivots provide shimmy-free performance
  • Hitch sits perpendicular to the ground, providing superior handling and stability
  • Double locking mechanism for extra security
  • Lightweight aluminum rack included

Thanks to the rear rack mount system, the rear rack can still be used to carry panniers for on the road necessities. The Piccolo comes with a safety flag as well as wheel and rear reflectors for visibility on the road.

I very rarely review products, but I have been enjoying this one so much for the past two months with my 4-year-old, that I wish to share it with others.
I am a rather short woman, and the trailers that connect under the seat post could not fit my bike at its seat hight. Burley's Piccolo, which connects via a rear rack, does not have that problem.
I found it hard to connect the rack myself, so I had it done by the local bike dealer (which added about $25 to the cost. I did not mind, as I got the trailer at an amazing discount on Amazon).
Once we adjusted the trailer's seat and handlebar hight correctly, my 4-year-old, who used a 12" bike with training wheels up to that point, found it sturdy and comfortable. She loves riding with me whenever possible.
With its revolving hitch, the combined bike is sturdy, very easy to maneuver even on narrow paths and around corners, and I hardly feel the extra load.
With its 7 speeds, even a young trailer-rider can contribute a lot of riding power, so that we can make it even up steep hills.
In addition, it is very easy to attach and detach the trailer (it takes just a few seconds).
I also appreciated it coming with a flag, which connects easily, stays in place while riding and can be disassembled compactly.
PROS
Connects to the back and not to the seat post.
Comfortable and adjustable.
Sturdy and easy to maneuver. It does not feel much different than riding alone.
The trailer-rider takes part of the cycling load, with 7 speeds.
Easy to attach and detach.
The flag works well and can be disassembled into two short rods.
CON
Knowing nothing about bike-assembly, I found it hard to connect the rear rack myself, and found the directions to be very minimal (more suitable for experts). It was an easy job for a bike mechanic, though.

After two months of use, I am absolutely raving about the product.
I highly recommend this addition to your bike and your lifestyle. Enjoy!

This is an excellent choice if you have little ones who don't ride as fast as you or aren't off of training wheels yet. The get to pedal and select gears. There is also an option to convert it to a normal bicycle.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only one to buy September 19, 2012
This is by far the best one - Do not buy one that attaches to your seat post. They wobble and they lean. Burley's Rack Mount design is the only way to go. I can stop pedaling and my 6 year old granddaughter can push me along. They are worth the money - If you don't want to spend this much... My advice is don't buy one at all.
PS - I did own the seatpost mounting style for a week - then I returned it and purchased a Burley.
