Book Description

November 3, 2005
Here is the detailed and fascinating history of how two legendary railroads — the Santa Fe and the Burlington Northern (which itself was comprised four major railroads) — merged in 1995 to create what remains one of America’s rail icons, the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF). A blockbuster railroad merits a history book of the same scale, and this book will awe railfans with its rich content.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Railfan & Railroad, January 2006 (circ.: 45,000)
“This is one heck of an impressive book! This book is packed with the story of the mega-merger era that produced the BNSF, but the illustrations turn it into one of the most spectacular history book every done.”

National Railway Bulletin, Winter 2005 (circ. unavailable)
“A monumental, oversized volume, graced with numerous striking, full color photographs. Solomon writes well, and the book is easy to read, but difficult to hold – as it weighs over five pounds. The book is well designed and very reasonably priced. It will appeal to devotees of the BNSF and photographers everywhere.”

The Lexington Quarterly, September 2006

“A fine collection of photographs, drawings, and a review of history and current operation of BNSF. For those who have an interest in BNSF and its predecessor companies, it is a must to add Solomon’s book to their collection.”

I've had the misfortune to be an easterner (PA) whose favorite railroads have always been in the West. Burlington Northern was my fave for years, and since the 1995 merger, BNSF RY. Brian Solomon is an excellent author and photographer, and BURLINGTON NORTHERN SANTA FE RAILWAY (2005) provides anything you want to know about this fine line. It's all there, from histories and photos of all the predecessor roads, the complete story of the merger, and interesting data on the current operations written in a style that can be enjoyed thoroughly by seasoned railfans and novices alike.
