Excellent, powerful snapshot of troubled times and place,
By Ravi C. (San Francisco, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Burma: The Next Killing Fields? (The Real Story Series) (Paperback)
Alan Clements is an authority on Burma/Myanmar, having lived there as a monk, and since then, traveled there multiple times and interviewed major democracy activists extensively, including Aung San Suu Kyi (see Voice of Hope). He is also a big supporter of Burmese democracy and human rights. This slim, quick-to-read account of atrocities there in the late 80's to early 90's is must reading for anyone interested in the current situation there. Clements makes forays into Rangoon, and also Manerplaw, the once-jungle hideaway of fleeing activists, and delivers heart-rending accounts of murder, torture, rape and other villainy perpetrated by the military junta. While I think it hasn't quite become a killing field on the order of Cambodia, Burma/Myanmar is still in horrendous shape. We must keep this place in our awareness and prayers, and commit to action.
