4.0 out of 5 stars Burma RIfles, June 5, 2001
By
Bob (Westerville Ohio) - See all my reviews
Book Description- Burma Rifles is the story of young man of Japanese decent living in America. This youth, Jerry, lived on the west coast when the Pearl Harbor bombing occurred. Although Jerry and his family considered themselves Americans not Japanese, that did not matter. The first few chapters of Burma Rifles relates Jerry's experiences before and after the war and also sets the plot in motion. After the bombing his family is relocated to a Japanese internment camp. While there, Jerry and a few other detainees volunteer for the service because they speak Japanese. From then on Jerry tells the story of his service from Minnesota to India. Racism was not the only obstacle he faced. The threat of death was always around him. Review- Burma Rifles is a very good book from many different points of view. The beginning, which focused on life after Pearl Harbor, gives a fresh perspective on what it was like for Japanese Americans during this time period. Not only is the racism revealed but also the reasons behind it. The war part of the book is very graphic. Each battle is described in great detail from planning to end, not just during. The scenes described are equal or greater to those of The Red Badge of Courage. This book however describes a different war and helps create an accurate picture of modern warfare. Burma Rifles is also a commentary on the brutality of war. Each person that is killed by Jerry is someway effects him. It usually comes in the form of reminding him that they are only different because of the uniform they wear.

5.0 out of 5 stars A young Japanese American joins US Army at the start of WWII, July 27, 1997
By A Customer
An excellent and unusual exciting adventure story of WWII. It tells the story of a young Japanese American joining the US Army, going through training and seeing combat in Burma. The main character lives with his parents on the west coast. At the start of WWII their farm is confiscated and they are sent to an internment camp. This is not a book preaching about the injustices done to the west coast Japanese Americans but it does tell what happened to these people. It also tells the story of the US Army fighting the Japanese in Burma, a story usually overshadowed by stories of the Marines fighting the Japanese in the South Pacific islands
