This review is from: Burn: Cycle (CD-ROM)
As a game Burn: Cycle wasn't bad back in 1994 when full motion video games were hitting the market. However the REAL reason to get this is not for the game, but for the bonus CD that was shipped with the game. Simon Boswell does the soundtrack for this game. He has done sountrack work for movies like Hackers, The Crying Game, and A Midsummer Night's Dream. What he puts in this soundtrack is some pretty nice electronic dance music.
Granted the bonus CD isn't hard core techno, however the music is definitely worth a listen to fans of the genre. Tracks like the Burn Cycle theme and Psychic Roulette offer some sweet EDM and you get some nice ambient music as well. Chris Whitten also contributes with the song Meltdown and a collaborative track with Boswell called Zip.
The game itself is a pretty standard Blade Runner setting kind of action/adventure game that was made back then. The action part was pretty simple. There is a lot of puzzle solving as well with some puzzles being a bit fun and challenging while others breathtakingly simple. The FMV actors did a good job and the setting was nice at the time. However by today's standards the game lacks in graphics and sound (the game uses General MIDI for music so no actual song tracks are on the game). Still it's not a bad extra for the audio CD you're really buying it for (hint hint).
The PC version (don't know about Mac) doesn't actually install the game, but rather runs the game from the CD. I guess that's good if you don't want an additional program on your computer. I think you are still able to make game saves to there are at least a few things that go on your computer.
Considering the price of this game there is no reason why a fan of electronic music shouldn't pick up a copy of this game. Just make sure the one you are getting does indeed come with the CD soundtrack. Otherwise you will be robbed of the thing that truly made Burn: Cycle a good buy.
