5.0 out of 5 stars A Sleeper Indie Rock Hit
I'm so glad I accidently stumbled upon Edison Glass. Out of complete accident one day I downloaded the song "Minutes for Memories" and instantly I fell in love. Bands usually only get one song to impressive me, and this NY based four piece did exactly that. 3.0 out of 5 stars They've Got Potential
I'll admit it, Edison Glass's off the wall rythms and riffs will catch your ear (that isn't to say its catchy) and invite you to listen. I'd also venture to say that In Such a State is one of the best pop songs I've heard in a long time. But while that song is one of the strongest on the album, it's also what drags the record down. I was expecting experimental-tech rock...

I'm so glad I accidently stumbled upon Edison Glass. Out of complete accident one day I downloaded the song "Minutes for Memories" and instantly I fell in love. Bands usually only get one song to impressive me, and this NY based four piece did exactly that. If you're unfamiliar with their sound (which most likely you will be), Edison Glass plays an upbeat brand of indie rock, full of sing-along melodies, catchy rhythms and poignant lyrics. If this type of rock and roll suits you, then Edison Glass is probably the one band that you need to hear this year.

After the first seconds of "My Fair One" start rolling, most are going to be captivated by the band's sound. Right out the gate Edison Glass presents the listener with exactly what you want to hear; Excellent, catchy music. The guitars are tight, yet play together with a loose relationship, which makes none of the songs sound calculated or forced. There's a very free and vibrant mystique to the band's sound, and they can easily go from a slower, atmospheric piece like "Starlight" to an upbeat rocker "In Such A State". The drums dabble in all areas, and can range from steady rhythms to quite complicated patterns. The way the band tends to balance their sound though is also most impressive. As the listener you get just enough of all spectrums of the music to keep you entertained and interested the whole time.

"Forever", "In Such A State" and "Starlight" are the real stand outs to me, but the whole record in itself is an impressive collection of songs. For a 13 track record that clocks in at just over 54 minutes, it flows perfectly every step of the way. Having the cd take you through twists and turns is the most exciting part, as you can one minute be singing along with melodies of "Angelic In Heart", before being subdued by the more relaxed "Minutes for Memories". Elsewhere "My Fair One" and "The River" satisfy your rock needs, while the title track and "You Mean The World To Me" are both quieter, more emotional songs. Overall there isn't one bad song in the bunch, and if any one of the previously mentioned songs does anything for you, this is really a must purchase.

"A Burn Or A Shiver" just might be the best indie rock album to hit shelves all this year just judging from my immediate listen. That might be a bold statement, but just one listen to the magic and emotion that is Edison Glass and you might be feeling the same way. "A Burn Or A Shiver" is recommended to all fans of indie and rock in general. Everyone should find something about this release to appreciate. It may not be the most well known album on the market at the moment, but I'm pretty sure that Edison Glass won't take long to catch on with a lot of people. Absolutely an outstanding album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Catchy and Confident (4.5 stars), October 11, 2006
This review is from: A Burn Or a Shiver (Audio CD)
As Indie Rock has taken a spiraling turn over the past decade, different bands are getting much more experimental with their musical vibe. Circa Survive gets technical, Spill Canvas has supreme sing-along anthems, Ariel Kill Him is subtle to an addicting point, and now comes Edison Glass with hooks that make you choke and an unbelievable sense of timing that comes through in their music.

Just when you think they're going to bust into a sing-song chorus (typical with pop/rock bands), they come through with a sick guitar solo that has you listening over and over and over again. What makes Edison Glass different is they have a keen sense to avoid predictability. Also, they have catchy hooks that make you sing that same song in your head. The guitars are subtle enough to give an indie rock feel, and heavy enough to bob your head throughout their songs.

The best track on the album has to be "When All We Have is Taken/Comfort", the first time I heard this song, I instantly fell in love. "If I'm unable when you were calling, if I'm unable when all we have is taken..." is an unbelievably catchy verse. The amazing guitar work in this song is what really makes this song great, though. The guitar solo after the second chorus (about 3 minutes into the song) is one of the greatest dual guitar solos I've ever heard. I couldn't help but start the track over repeatedly until I was satisfied, but the great thing is that I'm not satisfied; I listen to this CD all the time, it's ridiculous. I also recommend the song "In Such a State".

The only reason I didn't give this release 5 stars is even in such a great album like this, some of the songs in the middle tend to get repetitive and slow down the pace a little bit. Other than that, "A Burn or a Shiver" is one of the best releases of 2006, and probably the best indie rock album this year in my opinion.

Rock on! Later!

5.0 out of 5 stars Variety!!!, April 28, 2006
This review is from: A Burn Or a Shiver (Audio CD)
There is a ton of diverse musical styles blended here - from punk to indie to grunge. Combine that with very talented execution and slick production and you've got one of the best albums of the year so far. Also, the lyrics stay away from cliched phrases and is very impressive

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, March 28, 2007
This review is from: A Burn Or a Shiver (Audio CD)
I can't believe my ears! Amazing Christian Music?!

Yes, amazing. From the thrashing rocker "My Fair One" - which I'm assuming is derived from Song of Solomon (Bible) - to the emotive (?) and wonderfully lengthy "When All We Have Is Taken/Comfort," I am thoroughly impressed. Hands down, one of the better offerings in newer Christian albums.

But to be honest, every artist on Credential Recordings is amazing. I think there's only like six or seven on that label right now (Edison Glass, Future of Forestry, Turn Off the Stars, Dizmas, Lost Ocean, maybe a few others), but they're all amazing in their own unique way.

Edison Glass probably takes the cake though. It's more like a toss up between them and Future of Forestry.

That's All.

4.0 out of 5 stars Edison Glass doesn't settle for safe...and it pays off!, April 27, 2006
This review is from: A Burn Or a Shiver (Audio CD)
"A Burn Or A Shiver" is originality at its best. Edison Glass doesn't settle for an overdone, tired sound or style, but thinks completely outside the box and shows its staying power. Sounds similar to Sanctus Real. This is a great buy!

Edison Glass sets the bar high with their debut release "A Burn Or A Shiver." This album has hints of rock, pop, punk, and emo interspersed with clever lyrics and well-executed musical arrangements. Altogether, Edison Glass presents a very diverse and unique style that you won't find anywhere else in the music industry. So if you're looking for music that is creative and even a little more "crazy" than your regular tunes, definitely check out Edison Glass's "A Burn Or A Shiver"!

One of the cds u must get. If you like pop and rock, this is the album you should get. Just like the album promises. A burn or a shiver. Even though it's complex, rhythmically intricate rock, it has many vocals and the good musicianship is just awesome.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gracious Groove Energy, December 22, 2011
This review is from: A Burn Or a Shiver (Audio CD)
These guys have a sound that I would say is like Smashing Pumpkins blended with the Police. In other words, sparkling, starry-eyed alt rock with some jazz and traces of reggae here and there. What impresses me the most is how fluid and "living, breathing" they sound as they groove. There are so many bands (including many I love) whose music does not have the same quality...I want to say "organic" but they are not rootsy or acoustic, it's just that even as tight as they are, the music does not feel trapped in straight lines. It probably has something to do with the way that they shift between time signatures on some songs.

Anyway, there is a lot of energy here, a lot of beautiful tone. And it feels unified as an album, which I like. During the later middle of "When All We Have is Taken", one of the guitars starts tapping this rushing cascade of notes for a few measures, and that is for me the zenith of the album. Pretty cool.

However, the the main reason that I do not give this five stars is the second, higher-pitched of the two vocalists. The unusual tone of that voice just does not jive for me. It's kind of odd; I usually don't mind voices with higher, offbeat timbres, but this one is kind of unsettling for me to listen to. But give this a shot, download one song first, and if you like what you hear, then by all means go for the whole album.
