Whoever was in charge of the layout for this book needs to find new employment. This review is from: Burne-Jones: The Life and Works of Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) (Hardcover)
Whoever was in charge of the layout for this book needs to find new employment. The illustrations often have no association with the text, which typically lacks any hint about where the paintings being discussed are to be found in the book, or if they are even in the book at all. For example, on pp. 65-6 is a discussion of The Days of Creation, a famous series of six pictures. Where are they? No hint. Well, they turn up on pp. 82-3, or rather four of them do, above some completely unrelated text. On pp. 68-9 is a discussion of the Perseus series. Again, where are the pictures? No hint. The four paintings turn up back on pp. 143, 146, 148, and 151, surrounded by unrelated text. There is no rhyme or reason to the way this book is put together, and finding the pictures is not helped by frequently incorrect page numbers in the Index, and occasional variant titles. The text is informative, the pictures are well reproduced, but then presented too often in a frustrating, uncoordinated jumble for the reader to search through.
