5.0 out of 5 stars What It Be, January 10, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Burners (Paperback)
Before you order this, know what it is that you are going to get: This is a catalog from an Art Show in Europe back in 2006 and Not a Book. The cover is pretty flimsy, the pages are even more so, with a crappy plastic ring binding that's flimsy too. The whole thing is flimsy-which, on the night of the show was probably irritating, but if you KNOW this is what you are getting, then you can look beyond it and see this for what it is: A Truly Dope documentation of 40 different window-down whole cars that Henry Chalfant hadn't yet published even though by 2006 some of these pics were more than 3decades old.
Thank You Mr. Chalfant!
This collection of 40 fold out panoramic flicks of full cars painted from the window down to the bottom of the subway car itself by painters such as Resk, Zephyr, Seen, Skeme, Quik and a GRIP of others is gorgeous. This collection is highly recommended for collectors of graffiti art and memorabilia, and basically any graffiti artist out there who longs for the days of O.G. subway art, and for NYC Before The Buff.

To address an issue I read about it another review: The colors of this booklet are exaggerated through the process of printing used. Well, it is something to be aware of when you are going to order it, and if you are one that wants absolutely perfect color matching, my thought is "Too Bad"...I mean you're not gonna get a hold of these flicks in too many other places, and when it comes to reproductions of fullcars in books-the size of this volume provides some of the best representations of Subway Bombing that I have ever seen. being able to fold out 40 whole cars from the classic era or subway painting is awesome. If you are a fan of Mr. Chalfant's other works, I'm sure you'll enjoy this.

There are picture as well of the artists in their element from back in the day, contemporary quotes from some of the artists and an interview of Henry Chalfant, all of which are sweet to peep out. We all are familiar with the faces of those early writers and breakers from Subway Art and Style Wars, and this is another opportunity to enrich your own cultural knowledge with more words and images of these pioneers of Hip Hop.

Not for casual fans or kids, this is going to be worth some loot if you can find it in good condition in the future. I bought 2, one on a display table, and one in a safe deposit box.
This Is Dope.

5.0 out of 5 stars rare subway paintings, December 30, 2009
This review is from: Burners (Paperback)
In "Burners", Henry Chalfant presents 40 full color window-down subway paintings from the early
1980's. Window-down means underneath the train's windows. The book is a spiral bound catalogue
from his show at the Speerstra Gallery, which makes it somewhat delicate and hard to handle. Each
page folds out to display a single, digitally enhanced train car in it's entirety. We love that each page
includes the number of the car. It is a beautiful presentation and every page is a surprise. This book
demonstrates that although not every graffiti writer is a great artist and not every painting a finished
masterpiece, you can still get valuable insights and information from studying all the artworks in
graffiti's 30 year long history.
