5.0 out of 5 stars I Love This CD!, December 13, 2003
This review is from: The Burning Bridges Tour (Audio CD)
When I first listened to this debut CD, what immediately grabbed my attention was the dynamic array of voices she easily switches into -- they almost take on a life of their own, and you can vividly picture the characters in front of you as you burst out in laughter.

The execution of her jokes is near perfection, and she doesn't miss a beat in her delivery.

On a number of the tracks, her humor takes on an almost confessional quality, and one has to admire her willingness to be open in front of audiences which may or may not be just as willing to listen. On other tracks, she tackles conventional topics in unconventional ways, yet does ~NOT~ insult the intelligence of her audience.

This is simple (and equally insightful) comedy that crosses many different boundaries. I played the CD earlier in the evening to my 6-year-old nephew, and he loved it. Even a friend of mine who moved to DC from Germany and doesn't "get" a lot of American culture/humor thinks she is hilarious!

I've never recommended a stand-up CD in my life, but I highly recommend "Burning Bridges."

It's amazing to me this artist isn't more popular than she currently is, and it's only a matter of time before the entertainment industry catches on to what many who are hungering for something new and better in comedy have already known for a long time -- a talented phenomena where jagged brutal honesty clothed behind a warmly kind demeanor does exist, and exists without compromise. Thank you Maria Bamford for providing an original voice that's been missing in contemporary entertainment.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Burning Bridges Tour-Maria Bamford, December 14, 2003

For any fan of stand up, or anyone with ears, you must buy this CD. Maria can be seen on Comedy Central from time to time, but now you get to hear the whole act. I have listened to it over and over again, there is a lot of funny material here! I played it for a friend and she thought it was hilarious too. Maria has the uncanny ability to use her many voices to tell the stories of her life and making fun of her mother like no one else can.

Fulfill your potential and order it today.
Good times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bamford at her Best!, December 8, 2003

At last, Maria Bamford's wonderful comedy is on a CD!

Recorded at the Acme Comedy Company in Minneapolis, MN on October 25 & 26, 2002, Maria is in top form as she performs most of her classic material plus a few gems never shown on TV. This is by far the most complete collection of Maria's comedy to date.

Maria may appear to be a sweet, Midwestern blonde at first blush, but look out... beneath the beaming smiles and vulnerability are the lethal satirical jabs of a very witty and intelligent performer.

It is so refreshing to hear a comedian who doesn't rely on foul language and venom to get laughs. Instead she relies on her intelligence and her unique view of the world... not to mention her incredible array of voices and vocal sound effects! It is no wonder she is in demand for cartoon voiceovers as well as for her stand-up comedy.

If you are a Maria Bamford fan, get this CD. You won't regret it.

If you haven't heard Maria's unique comedy, catch her next TV performance and see why her fans are so crazy about her. Then buy the CD so you can hear all the good stuff they cut from the TV shows.

Maria, you rock! For Reals!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Impressive Debut Album, February 1, 2006

There's a bit of a lack right now of really unique, standout female comics, and I'm keeping a close eye on Bamford. Her act works because she A) is down-to-Earth and sincere, not an invented "character"; and B) her voices take her beyond the formulaic joke-telling practiced by most comics. And an important part of why her voices are so effective is that she never uses them in an announced, "hey guys, I'd like to do some impressions now" kind of way. Her characters come up naturally, and are used to discuss interesting subjects and social points. Characters presented conversationally as a tool for satire is infinitely more interesting than the almost Vaudevillian "Here are my impressions guys" format.

Maria Bamford's work on "Burning Bridges" is diverse in subject matter, yet consistently funny. It's an excellent introduction to Bamford's vulnerable and insightful presence. Along with her partners who tour together as the "Comedians of Comedy", she is underated, inspired, and hopefully a star in the making.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best female standup out there..., December 20, 2006
This review is from: The Burning Bridges Tour (Audio CD)
This is honestly some the best standup comedy I've ever heard. Maria is unique and quirky in her humor, and this cd really does her justice. I've yet to find one person who hasn't laughed out loud several times during this cd. While her many (very impressive) voices are her main attraction, she doesn't overdo them...she backs everything up with solid comedy that is actually FUNNY. She's also very quotable.

Too many female comediennes now seem like they're just struggling to make it in a man's world, so their routines are usually either too wraunchy, desperate, or man-hating. Not even a hint of that with Maria. She's brilliantly hilarious and her comedy is a brand of its own. An undeniable true talent.
Entertaining, energetic, and witty- you'll become a Maria Bamford fan within 10 minutes of listening to this cd.

Personal favorite tracks: Small Talk, Crazy Cult, Vennette

4.0 out of 5 stars Buy This Now, October 8, 2008
This review is from: The Burning Bridges Tour (Audio CD)
If you have not yet heard Maria Bramford, you should buy this now. If you have heard her, then you know why you should buy it. Are you tired of comics who only do jokes about things that happen in the bathroom or the bedroom? Bramford expands the universe of what we can laugh about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious. Finally, a female comedian who is NOT a hack!, July 30, 2007
This review is from: The Burning Bridges Tour (Audio CD)
I host a weekly comedy/novelty radio show, and I've gotten nothing but praise for playing tracks from this CD. It's easily one of the best stand-up CDs I've heard in recent years, male or female. And trust me, I'm picky when it comes to stand-up.

I have very low tolerance for "hack" comedy, and by that I mean the comedy topics that we've all heard a million other comedians do: riding on airplanes, sounds from the McDonald's drive-thru speaker, Clinton/Lewinsky jokes, dogs vs. cats, etc. More specifically, there are the routines that we've heard virtually every stale female stand-up do before: guys-are-dumb, periods-are-funny, male bashing, stupid pet stories, male bashing, and did I mention male bashing? Bamford however steers clear of all that mess.

OK, granted she does have routines like the crazy mother stories and commentary on the dating scene. But even then, she has her own surreal twist to the topics that's truly witty. She's one of the few I know of that never tries to split the audience into men vs. women to get cheap, self-righteous applause. Bamford simply delivers great comedy. And not to sound like a prude, but she doesn't need "dick jokes" (the comedy term for shock/sex jokes) to hold the audience either. And as others have mentioned, she works an incredibly diverse amount of voices into her act, which really push the delivery. The "Christian Teen" voice still cracks me up to no end.

If you're looking for some new comedy that's original and witty, definitely give this one a listen, especially if you like a lot of the other acts on the "Stand-Up! Records" label.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Funny Chick, March 4, 2006
This review is from: The Burning Bridges Tour (Audio CD)
I checked this girl out because I was noticing her on different TV shows and whatnot, and I checked out her CD. It is so incredibly hilarious. Her voices are very funny, and her talk about "sexual harrassment" is funny as well. If you're going to buy the CD, buy it for her explaining what to do with Saddam. Make him a Roller Rink DJ. Funny stuff. I haven't seen her live, as with any comedian, but I'm sure she brings the same things to the table as on this CD.
