Call it "Eclectic" Light Orchestra,
By A Customer
This review is from: Burning Bright (Audio CD)
Here's a very interesting budget overview of ELO that includes some big hits ("Hold On Tight," "Turn to Stone," "Strange Magic," and "Livin' Thing" for starters) and some outstanding album tracks (the instrumental tour de force "Fire On High," "Stranger," "Standin' in the Rain," and "Night in the City"). It's 40 minutes of pop brilliance. The packaging is cheap, but if it's music that you want, this CD has the goods. Be on the lookout for ELO CLASSICS, which is another budget CD in a similar vein to BURNING BRIGHT, with some other great cuts.

For the fans of ELO, this is the keeper. Not only does it have thier greatest music but it is great quality as well. Don't buy it for liner notes or fancy artwork - there is none of that here. Only the greatest pop group ever. If you want fancy artwork or liner notes, buy vinyl for the best visuals. No other band can play like this with such emotion. Boy, I wished they stilled toured.

Better than ELO Classics,

Although this compilation isn't entirely that great but it's nice that they have Fire on High (which should've been on the Greatest Hits album as well as Strange Music: The Best Of) and I used to crank up Standin' in the Rain all the time around the late months of 1996 to about summer of 1997, that song should've been a huge hit, it's also nice to see them put Night in the City on here as well, I remember that I desparately wanted to hear Strange Magic cause it was one of my favorite songs around that time period.Song list Turn to Stone, Livin Thing, Standin in the Rain, Stranger, Strange Magic, Hold on Tight, Night in the City, Do Ya, Fire on High and Rock 'n' Roll is King.

This is a nice compilation of ELO songs, four of which that did not make the cut on ELO's boxset in 1990, Afterglow. (Standing In The Rain, Stranger, Night In The City and Fire On High)
This is a very nice, inexpensive collection of ELO songs from their post-Eldorado era. However, the album is NOT remastered. It has good production (same as on Afterglow), not too bright, lots of audio headroom and it has a nice version of Night In The City (no dropouts like on the 2007 remastered Out Of The Blue). If you want to initiate someone who is unfamiliar with ELO, this is the album to get them.

Highest marks for including "Stranger", a lost gem that I absolutely love, and have since I first heard it many moons ago.
Lowest marks for not including "Can't Get it Out of My Head". Oh well, can't have everything.

From Out of The Blue to Face The Music,

I LOVE ELO and and for anyone out there who also love to listen to ELO, this is one of the best album that I believe covers the widest range of time span without being a double set album. This CD has songs from the early days of ELO on 'Out OF THE Blue' to their later stuff on Face The Music. The only thing it lacks is the artwork that often associated with ELO fans. This album is mainly for the music and nothing else. It does not have any interesting artwork that ELO earlier album desings bring like 'A New World Record', 'Out of the Blue' and even 'Face the Music'. If you're a new fan, I sugest buying their earlier stuff I've just mentioned because you can fantasize by looking at the pictures of the album while listening. I believe it's even better if you can get their stuff on Vinyl records since the artworks are in large format and they're very well done. This is sometihng the CD has never been able to do for bands like ELO among others. However, if you're interested in an album that has all the good songs and you can do OK without the artwork and desing, then this album is perfect for you. ALL the songs are good on this CD. "Night In The City" is my favorite on this CD because it has that haunting lyrics like .....Night in the City driving you insane.....I'll get cha, yes I'm gonna getcha, ......and strated running like a snake, I just can't take anymore, I'm going into the door into the City etc....together with some extremely creative work on the melody of the string instruments and sound effects gives this tune one of the classics of ELO that no other band has. You have to listen to it to see what I mean. They are truly unique in their sound that lets you the listener dream and wonder about the mystical world that they sing about. ELO Rocks like a classical orchestra with all the strings like violin, cello, and a metal guitar and hard rock drum beat. No other band has done it like they do with this combination of classical instruments and modern rock instruments together. AMaZING!!! |
