It sure did burn my ear hairs, February 2, 2010

This album is one of the biggest surprises i've had in years. Not only does it have creative playing of the highest level in the avant and improv/free jazz styles, but it also manages something else entirely unexpected. It manages to create a surreal audio world, a sort of movie soundtrack created only for your listening pleasure. It manages to go from ambiance to ambiance (and by that i do not mean 'ambient music') in the most cohesive way, creating the most surprising backdrops for the really fine improvising and playing from all involved. Some of the instruments and ideas are just not typical of the free jazz idiom. But it works. And the solos are great and imaginative, specially from Butch. Really, a masterpiece of contemporary music. And it seems like an exception in the Butch's discography as i have not heard another album of his that matches 'Burning Cloud'. Highly recommended to searchers of fine free music, avant garde and , why not say it?... jazz! (yes, that's right, it's got jazz, Wynton...don't you dare call the jazz police on this one!).
