Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The last of the three major accounts of the prestigious brokerage house's demise, this book rivals Mark Stevens's Sudden Death: The Rise and Fall of E.F. Hutton ( LJ 6/15/89), and surpasses Donna Carpenter and John Feloni's The Fall of the House of Hutton ( LJ 7/89). Evaluating a wide range of documents (many of a confidential nature) and interviewing the major players, New York Times reporter Sterngold describes how greed, incompetent management, and the rivalry between Chairman Robert Foman and Bob Rittereiser, the new president, led to Hutton's eventual sale to Shearson Lehman. Although sometimes confusing because of the number of personalities involved, this is a worthwhile purchase for most libraries. However, the Stevens book, if already purchased, may be adequate for all but the most comprehensive business collections.
