Burning Down the Spouse by Dakota Cassidy is the second in the Ex-Trophy wife series. I didn't read the first book in this series and had absolutely no problem following the story line.

The book is about ex-trophy wife, Frankie, who supported her famous chef husband for years until one day she found out about his cheating and blows up on live TV. After an awful divorce, we find Frankie at her Aunt's retirement village sleeping her life away. Frankie is dragged out of bed and into the real world by her loving Aunt and another ex-trophy wife. The ex-trophy wife also helps Frankie land a job at a diner filled with a loud and loving Greek family.

Enter sexy Nikos who runs his families diner. Once this family came in to the book, everything really took off for me, I could put the book down! The family dynamics are entertaining and heart warming. We find out about Nikos and Frankie in layers. One of my favorite characters in Nikos brother Comos, who is protective and loves stirring up trouble. I couldn't stand the ex-husband and wanted to reach in to the book and strangle him!

I can't wait to go back and read the first book in the series, You dropped a Blonde on Me.

I am in love with Dakota Cassidy's writing!! Snarky, hilarious, awesome characters coupled with brilliant, hilarious and romantic dialogue makes for one super delightful read! This one had another 'broken' heroine AND a little bit 'broken' and super jealous hero - boy, that makes for a fun ride! There is so much I love about this series that I had to buy it for my bookshelf and I'll just leave it at that!
LOVED IT!

Dakota Cassidy delivers another delightful adventure in the evolution of an ex-Trophy Wife in her newest release, Burning Down the Spouse! Her sassy, spunky characters draw you in from the first page. Frankie Bennett is hiding from life beneath the soft sheets of her Aunt's guestroom bed after finding out her husband had been playing slap and tickle with another woman. She is lost and has no idea how to change her life, nor does she want to. Enter Maxine, owner of Trophy Jobs Employment Agency and a dear friend of her Aunt. She will not take "no" for an answer and badgers Frankie back into the world!

Then we have Nikos Antonakas, Frankie's new boss at Greek Meets Eat Diner. Nikos is drawn to Frankie from the moment he meets her. He can't resist hiring this cheeky woman whose vulnerability shines through no matter how much she tries to disguise it. So begins a dance of thrust and parry as Frankie and Nikos navigate the twisting curves of discovery and evolution that encompass Frankie's transformation from Ex Trophy Wife to a confidant, self sufficient - sucking it up- Princess!

They are accompanied on this journey by friends and family whose characters are so true to life that you will swear you have met them somewhere! Ms. Bliss will not detail the wonderful, madcap direction this story takes to preserve it for those who have yet to indulge in this delightful read. I will say that Dakota Cassidy poignantly weaves a tale of despair and dejection into a vibrant, witty tribute to change and resiliency! Another Best Seller!! Don't miss out on this wonderful contemporary romance!

My Review:

I absolutely love Dakota's books and her writing voice. They crack me up. They entertain me. They make me smile. This book, #2 in the Trophy Wives series, was no exception to all of those things.

In this book we meet Frankie, moments after her live-on-the-air meltdown when she finds out her celebrity chef husband of eighteen years was cheating on her. This revelation sends her into a divorce, poverty, and depression. This is where Maxine (heroine from book #1) comes in, as a former trophy wife herself, to help get Frankie motivated again. With her "Suck it up, Princess" attitude, things start to turn around for Frankie starting with a job doing prep work at Nikos' family diner in New Jersey.

Nikos is hot and sexy and he has a thing for strays and damsels in distress. The issue with that is that damsels in distress tend to have a lot of baggage which doesn't make them great candidates for trusting his heart with them. He has been hurt before...several times, so even though he is drawn to Frankie, he tries to resist.

I LOVED Frankie's character. I loved the fact that once she started to develop a backbone again, she embraced it. She is not a meek little thing and I love it when she stands up for herself and her emotions with Nikos. But she isn't a fly-off-the-handle kind of gal. She learned that lesson on national tv and knows that isn't the way to handle anything. This is a character who grows so much through this book. I LOVE that!

In addition to Frankie and Nikos' love story, there is a secondary love story between Simon (Nikos' friend) and Jasmine (Frankie's friend and fellow former trophy wife.) I loved Simon's character. He is a former NFL quarterback who is now blind, but his attitude towards that blindness is awesome.

Burning Down the Spouse by Dakota Cassidy
Contemporary Romance -July 5th, 2011
3 1/2 stars

Burning Down the Spouse is the second in the author's humorous Ex Trophy Wives series. It is a fun, light-hearted romp for the summer.

When Frankie discovers Mitch, her celebrity chef husband, cheated on her, she has a melt down on live TV! They soon divorce, but because Frankie naively signed a pre-nup she is now dirt poor. In a funk and looking worse for wear, Frankie sleeps in and never goes out. That is until a friend persuades her to work at a Greek diner that is known for its world famous meatloaf! Frankie is very reluctant; she doesn't even like to cook! But she soon meets some warm and caring individuals. Plus the sexy owner Nikos might be the man to give her a new perspective on life. It seems life is looking up. Then her ex, Mitch returns and asks her to make more recipes for him. It turns out Frankie may not like to cook, but she is the genius behind his cooking! When Mitch pulls a big one and manipulates Frankie to get help him, Nikos becomes jealous. Will their budding relationship overcome Mitch's further betrayals?

This was a comical read. I really liked the start of the story, which includes an eclectic and amusing cast. Nikos's family reminded me a bit of the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding. I loved his family. There are also many interesting characters that could easily have their own stories. In fact, the author has another side romance that I found very enjoyable. However, Frankie takes some time to warm up to Nikos since she is newly divorced. So the relationship between them is very slow to start and sometimes even dragged. Nikos was so considerate and sexy hot that I was amazed Frankie was able to resist him for so long.
