Glenn Hughes rocks,
By A Customer
This review is from: Burning Japan Live (Audio CD)
As a fan of Deep Purple in its many incarnations, I find Glenn Hughes to be one of Purple's most interesting voices. This album allows Glenn to rock and not worry about playing bass. Backed with two guitars, these songs really rock. (Just thing what Purple might have sounded like with two guitars.) This is a great live album that needs to be cranked up.

I love Glenn and his band, but he is in "Rock God" mode as far as his vocals go and there is way to much high pitched screeching vs. actual emotive singing with some of the vocals seeming a little rushed as if he was trying live up to ego trip as, "I am the voice of rock", than hey I can sing too instead of the constant screaming. I would have suggested a more mature approach with occasional restraint and constraint. In the '70s with Trapeze and Deep Purple, it was more of a group effort with other talents and egos having more success in keeping over-inflated egos from tryng to upstage and be the front person with each musician doing their job and not tring to steal the show. In Burning Japan, this is all about Glenn, and frankly way too much, at times, over the top vocal excess. I would suggest skipping this one and trying some of his other CDs whether it is straight rock, or the funk infused stuff he can sing so well.

From the opening track I was hooked! Unbelievable. This CD has taken up residence in my car player.Much to my kids' disgust! The ex purple tracks "Burn", "Stormbringer", "Lady Double Dealer", "Gettin' Tighter" make me wonder WHO was the voice of DP. But when you mix in the likes of "Into the Void" and "Coast to Coast". You have one unbelievable album. Recorded over two nights in 1994, makes you wonder if their are any more tracks in the archive somewhere?
(Just a whisper: Soulfully Live in the City of Angels is better!)
