4.0 out of 5 stars Glenn Hughes rocks
As a fan of Deep Purple in its many incarnations, I find Glenn Hughes to be one of Purple's most interesting voices. This album allows Glenn to rock and not worry about playing bass. Backed with two guitars, these songs really rock. (Just thing what Purple might have sounded like with two guitars.) This is a great live album that needs to be cranked up.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed but still a fan!
I love Glenn and his band, but he is in "Rock God" mode as far as his vocals go and there is way to much high pitched screeching vs. actual emotive singing with some of the vocals seeming a little rushed as if he was trying live up to ego trip as, "I am the voice of rock", than hey I can sing too instead of the constant screaming. I would have suggested a more mature approach with occasional restraint and constraint. In the '70s with Trapeze and Deep Purple, it was more of a group effort with other talents and egos having more success in keeping over-inflated egos from tryng to upstage and be the front person with each musician doing their job and not tring to steal the show. In Burning Japan, this is all about Glenn, and frankly way too much, at times, over the top vocal excess. I would suggest skipping this one and trying some of his other CDs whether it is straight rock, or the funk infused stuff he can sing so well.

From the opening track I was hooked! Unbelievable. This CD has taken up residence in my car player.Much to my kids' disgust! The ex purple tracks "Burn", "Stormbringer", "Lady Double Dealer", "Gettin' Tighter" make me wonder WHO was the voice of DP. But when you mix in the likes of "Into the Void" and "Coast to Coast". You have one unbelievable album. Recorded over two nights in 1994, makes you wonder if their are any more tracks in the archive somewhere?
(Just a whisper: Soulfully Live in the City of Angels is better!)

4.0 out of 5 stars Glenn Hughes At Top Form, May 26, 2006

If you are a Glenn Hughes or a Deep Purple fan of the Coverdale/Hughes era you should get this CD. Although I thought Deep Purple took a step back when Ian Gillian and Roger Glover left Deep Purple and David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes joined the band they made some great songs. This CD in my opinion captures Glenn Hughes at his best singing some of the best Deep Purple and his own songs live in concert. His voice is in top notch form and the sound is great for a live recording. If the rock and roll Gelnn Hughes is what you like here it is in all it's glory. At times I can give or take some of his solo stuff but this is kick [...] all the way. Listen to it loud and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars God of Voice in top form, January 27, 2000

This is a sort of best-of live featuring Deep Purple tracks, solo stuff, and one song from Hughes/Thrall. Backed by a hard rock band of Northern European session men, here Hughes is in fine form, playing songs you know with conviction. He doesn't quite out-yowl Ian Gillan and the Robert Plant wannabe photo on the back cover is a bit much, but this is GREAT live rock and roll.

5.0 out of 5 stars The True Voice Of Rock, March 19, 2001

I have been fortunate enough to follow Glenn's music in its many styles and stages. One thing that is always true abou Glenn is his remarkable rane as a singer and his feel for the vibe of the music. This album is a true example of that range and vibe. The energy and flow of the album along with the song selection (and performance)makes it my pick for album of the year. No matter if the boy can sing the blues or sing Stevie Wonder remakes no singer takes you into the void the way Glenn does. Despite having 38 albums that feature Glenn's vocals, this along with Feel always top my play list.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just get it ...., September 11, 1999
This review is from: Burning Japan Live (Audio CD)
When Gillan and Glover left Deep Purple Mark II, the remaining three components wondered whether to hire Glenn Hughes both as the bass player and the lead singer. Books say that they were not convinced, and so they got David Coverdale too. When I first discovered this, I thought they were right and that Glenn couldn't do it alone. After listening to this CD I changed my mind ....

5.0 out of 5 stars Glenn Purple, June 3, 2001
