With illustrations by her husband Marc, Bella Chagall's memoir comes from the poignant brush strokes of childhood, focusing on Jewish holidays and family life. If you are curious about the life your immigrant forebears left behind, this will satisfy. I highly recommend it.

I enjoyed this book as a quite short and very poetic read and wanted to add a couple of notes for other readers.

1. With respect to the 'childishness' of the language, it might be helpful to know that Bella chose to write in her childhood language of Yiddish in her later years when she was apparently no longer very familiar with it. That's quite a particular thing for a writer to do since her vocabulary would have been limited and she would naturally fall into sentence structures and a way of thinking she had used as a child. It leads to a kind of primitivism (which I don't mean as a criticism, I quite like it). One near analogy might be drawing with your non-dominant hand.

2. The book is structured around the rhythms of Jewish life: weekly, monthly, yearly festivals as practiced by Bella's family and more generally by Jews in Eastern Europe at that time so it's really nice not just as a poetic childhood story but as an insight into that culture.

A preliminary review - I read this book years and years ago - and it has stuck with me. Such visual images - this little girls walking around in her fathers jewelreystore. Just got it, and just save it to be reread at a time when I am in a more 'reflexive mood'. Will then come back with comments - but I am almost afraid - I have changed, will I still be enticed????????

This book was penetrating and witty, giving a portrait of pre-war Vitebsk that makes the reader feel transported back to that time and location. Sweet without being cloying, the memoir bursts from the pages as if Bella were in front of you, holding a conversation with you.
