Book Description

September 25, 2000
From Hell to Stratton isn’t an easy trip, especially when the enemy’s headquarters lies somewhere in between. And that’s exactly where Ellie and her friends unwillingly find themselves — smack in the middle of the Wirrawee airfield. With only five of them against hundreds of armed soldiers, escape seems like a suicide mission. The odds aren’t good, and Kevin’s nervous breakdown isn’t helping matters.
Ellie and her compatriots are back, battling to stay alive and struggling to stay together in John Marsden’s latest book in the TOMORROW, WHEN THE WAR BEGAN series. High-speed truck chases, unexpected river journeys, and treachery by one of their own are just a few of the problems these Australian teens face in this gritty tale of war and survival.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Ellie has started to believe she won't survive the war. Their band of eight teenage guerrillas is down to five now--Robyn and Corrie and Chris are dead, and only she and Homer and Kevin and Lee and Fi are still trying to sabotage the enemy who has taken over their country. They're growing numb and soul sick from the violence, because they've been fighting for a long time--through four previous novels, actually: John Marsden's Tomorrow: When the War Began, The Dead of Night, A Killing Frost, and Darkness Be My Friend. At the same time, they are normal teens who kid around, fall in and out of love, and think long thoughts about the meaning of life.

It is this poignant human dimension that lifts Marsden's series above the run-of-the-mill spy action novel--that and the fact that nobody is better at writing about things blowing up. And his scenes leading up to the explosion create tension so powerful it is almost unbearable to keep on reading--but impossible not to. In Burning for Revenge, the five have been abandoned in enemy territory when the New Zealand general decides that they are not valuable enough to send a rescue helicopter. Without any definite plans, they sneak into the back of a truck, only to find themselves at the end of the ride deep within the enemy's airfield. How they battle out of the situation and leave the enemy's air power in ruins makes a breathlessly exciting story that will not disappoint the many teen fans of this excellent series. (Ages 12 and older) --Patty Campbell

From School Library Journal

Grade 8 Up-"If only our country hadn't been invaded." Ellie and her friends are back in this fifth volume of Marsden's adventure series that started with Tomorrow, When the War Began (Houghton, 1995). Having orchestrated several harrowing guerrilla attacks on the enemy, the five teens find themselves inside the enemy-held Wirrawee Airfield, outnumbered by hundreds of trained and heavily armed soldiers. Their decision to inflict as much damage as possible sounds like a suicide mission, but these gutsy teens pull off a brutal attack and escape worthy of a Hollywood movie. The action is fast paced and heart stopping, and the characters are so believable that readers forget that the story is fiction. Although Marsden's description of warfare and death is explicit, it is necessary to make his story real. Ellie, the narrator, is thoughtful, resilient, brave, and yet totally human. The other characters are equally intriguing; teenagers will readily identify with their fears and emotions. Fans of this incredibly suspenseful and riveting series will not be disappointed. If your library owns volumes one through four, this is a must buy. If you haven't yet discovered Marsden's writing, it is well worth investigat-ing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome!, September 21, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Burning for Revenge (The Tomorrow Series #5) (Hardcover)
John Marsden has done it again. Book 5 will not disappoint you! If you've been anxiously awaiting the end -- Books 6 and 7, intitled The Night is for Hunting and The Other Side of Dawn, respectively -- you shouldn't have to wait long. I already own all 7 and I live in North America! There is this Australian online bookstore at bookworm.au which sells all 7 books in softcover with very reasonable shipping charges. It is a pretty rudimentary site -- I suspect it is run out of someone's basement -- but they sure deliver! I almost didn't want to read The Other Side of Dawn because I knew that that would be it for one of the best series I have ever come across. I won't give anything away but I will say that the series did not disappoint!!

I absolutley love the Tomorrow series, and book #5, Burning for Revenge, was no exception. I live in the US, but I got it from Amazon's UK site, since it's already out there. If you haven't read the Tomorrow series yet, you definitley should.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!, September 14, 2000
This review is from: Burning for Revenge (The Tomorrow Series #5) (Hardcover)
I absolutely love John Marsden. I've read nearly all his books:so much to tell you, letters from the inside, Nortons hut-they were all great, but this book was the best of the best. This book seems a bit shorter than the others, but it's probably because I read it so fast! Even though this was the best book out of the Tommorow series, I suggest that you read the books in order, otherwise it will ruin some of the endings. Here's the order: Tommorow when the war began, the dead of night, the killing frost(US)/The third day the Frost(UK), Darkness be my friend, Burning for revenge, the night is for hunting, the otherside of dawn. The last 2 books can be special ordered from the UK.
