5.0 out of 5 stars Very memorable book
I read this book several years ago, yet it stands out vividly in my mind. I feel that I will always remember the outline of this compelling and adventuresome story unlike the vast majority of routine novels that I have read.

If you like the sound of an African adventure novel with a young shipwrecked woman struggling to survive, I highly recommend it!

I didn't care for this book particularly. The leading lady is not likeable at all. Yes, she has lost a lot of loved ones and been shipwrecked, etc., but she is too hard boiled for my tastes and too determined to get her own way. While she is horrified that Lothar has killed her little friends who saved her from the desert, she has no qualms about destroying their sacred grounds when she is diamond hunting. She can't forgive Lothar for doing something in fear and superstition and tries to kill him even though he has saved her life as well as her baby's life when they were attacked by a lion. She invites him into her bed and gets pregnant, much like she did with Michael Courtney and then totally turns away from him after she has been saved by him and then gives away her baby. I understand the anger but what about all of the horrible things she has done? She killed the old sailor who saved her when they were shipwrecked. She is not a nice person and I suspect that in the sequel, she will not improve.

Wilbur Smith is one of the best writers out there. I've read all of his books. The Burning Shore is one of the top books I've ever read. I would recommend it to anyone. It's a tale of survival against the toughest challenges. It also reveals the origins of an important piece of history.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Burning Shore, April 14, 2009
This review is from: The Burning Shore (Mass Market Paperback)
In this first of the Courtney in Africa series, Wilbur Smith depicts nature in wondrous descriptions, sharply brings out the personalities of his characters, and weaves a tapestry of action-filled intricate plots.
When you read one of Wilbur Smith's novels, you want to read them all.

I never thought about Africa being a fun place to visit until I traveled there on a merchant ship in 2008. We went completely around Africa twice stopping in Egypt, Kenya, Mozambique, South Africa and Cameroon. I had so much fun there I went back to Kenya on a holiday when my time on the ship was over. A friend told me about Wilbur Smith and in 2009 I read all 32 books he has written on Africa and surrounding areas. I highly recommend all his books especially the ones on the Courtney family!

4.0 out of 5 stars another W. Smith winner, September 12, 2009

I absolutely love Wilber Smith's books, and this is another winner. It's not my favorite, even though I would have a hard time picking one. I did absolutely love "Monsoon", but it was the first one of this books that I read, so I could be prejudiced. I'm one of his newer fans, but if you like exciting books with marvelous characters, you can't go wrong. He is fantastic!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wilbur Smith is my favorite., October 18, 2011

I love the Wilbur Smith Courtney Series. It's been hard to find them, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that they're slowly adding them to Kindle books. These are wonderful adventure/swashbuckler books who follow several generations of the Courtney clan of Africa. The author is African and knows all about the topography, culture, animal life and hunting and history of Africa. There is much to be learned here, too. I recommend all Wilbur Smith's books and hope he lives another 20 years and writes lots more books for me.
