4.0 out of 5 stars Great album, but get the best version
Released in 2004, The Burning is the second album by Finnish progressive/power metal band Thunderstone. Unlike their countrymen in Stratovarius and Sonata Arctica, who take a more clinical (and unfortunately more repetitive) approach to progressive metal, Thunderstone brings plenty of energy and aggression into their sound. 2.0 out of 5 stars Excessively formulaic
This power metal band from Finland does some competent instrumental work, but the songs come across as formulaic and uninspired. The main problem here is that the songwriting is unmelodic, with few memorable ideas. A further problem is that the vocalist's range is rather limited. As a result, each track sounds very much like the previous one, and none of them really...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great album, but get the best version, October 26, 2007
This review is from: Burning (Audio CD)
Released in 2004, The Burning is the second album by Finnish progressive/power metal band Thunderstone. Unlike their countrymen in Stratovarius and Sonata Arctica, who take a more clinical (and unfortunately more repetitive) approach to progressive metal, Thunderstone brings plenty of energy and aggression into their sound. They're as technically proficient as you'd expect from a European prog/power band, but like Symphorce and Tad Morose, Thunderstone lets you know in no uncertain terms that they are a METAL band first and foremost. Listen to the song "Forth into the Black" and ask yourself when was the last time Stratovarius had you banging your head like that.

The Burning is a fantastic metal album from start to finish. It's fierce and melodic, progressive and powerful, and full of energy. Anyone interested in European progressive and/or power metal should definitely check out Thunderstone, and the Burning is a great album to start with.

NOTE: There's a limited edition of The Burning that comes housed in a neat digipack and features 6 bonus tracks - covers of Welcome Home (Sanitarium) by Metallica, Diamonds & Rust by Joan Baez (later covered by Judas Priest), and Manowar's Heart of Steel, as well as three demo songs. These are the same bonus tracks found on the Japanese import, but at a far lower price. If you haven't already picked this album up, it pays to seek out the limited edition. If you have, you may want to consider upgrading.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Burning Is One Hot Title!, September 8, 2006
This review is from: Burning (Audio CD)
This is the best of Thunderstone. Any metalhead looking to spice up their collection should give The Burning a try. It has emotional vocals, killer guitar solos, good melodies, and textbook drumming. Overall it is excellent. Five stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great music! TERRIBLE production..., February 11, 2009
This review is from: Burning (Audio CD)
I just got the CD today, and the music/songs/musicianship is great. But the album is SO compressed that every note is a jumbled mess unless you have the volume down really low. Overall I would suggest the CD, it's very very good (just a shame that the production stinks so bad).

Thunderstone blew me away with their first effort and they have done it again, "The Burning" is an amazing piece of melodic power metal, full of catchy choruses, nice guitar and bass lines and some awesome guitar solo's

let me tell you this band is groundbreaking. powerful songs with a bunch of melodies. All the songs are catchy with great riffs and keyboard solos. I would totally recommed this to any one who is likes edguy, sonata arctica.

fav songs: Spire, Forth into the Black, Sea of Sorrow.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good But not as Great as I was Hoping For...., May 26, 2005

I sampled a couple fast tunes of theirs on the internet before purchasing this CD....

But I was disappointed more of the songs were not as up-tempo as I'd like....

They are a good band though, with several good songs, and very good production quality....I personally liked the faster ones, like Break The Emotion....

So, anyway, they are a good band, have tremendous potential, but are not consistently fast enough for my tastes quite yet, like maybe a Sonata Arctica, or a DragonForce....but I'll have to take another listen to them, see if they grow on me, and I'll have to keep an eye out for them to see if they grow as a band more toward my tastes....
