Christy Moore keeps getting better,
By Rain Man (Indian Trail, NC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Burning Times (Audio CD)
Christy Moore's new CD is a terrific, stripped down collection of beautiful songs, perfectly balancing Christy's voice with Declan Sinnott's restrained yet perfect guitar accompaniment. The only true "foot-tapper" is Sixteen Fisherman Raving written by Wally Page, which in itself is worth the purchase of this disc, but the ballads Christy's selected from some of his favorite songwriters (such as Bob Dylan, Natalie Merchant Richard Thompson and Morrissey) are better than the originals in my opinion. Highlights include Beeswing, The Lonsesome Death of Hattie Carrol, Mercy, Magdalene Laundries and Morrissey's acerbic "America, I Love You". Declan's brooding slide guitar on Mercy is also well worth a listen.

All I can say is WOW! It looks like the fiery Christy Moore is still at it! There are beautiful songs on this album - a gentle meditation on nature, a compassionate look at what Irish women went through at the Magdalene Laundries (covering an excellent old Joni Mitchell song), a rollicking fisherman's song... Great album! I'm American (and a veteran!) and have to say that -- although there are plenty of people who won't like it -- I enjoyed every song on the album, including "America." He's right - we *should* stay where we live and stop invading countries that didn't hurt us. Politics aside, the whole CD is wonderful. I listened to it all day today while working on a particularly onerous task and it really did me a world of good. We were lucky enough to see Christy twice in concert this year - he is fantastic! Check out his new CD and DVD "Live at the Point 2006" - we saw one of the featured concerts and even though Christy is terrific live, I think that we got far more out of the songs on the DVD and CD. THANKS, Christy! Keep up the great work!!

This album is gritty and bluesy and Irish. I like it, but you have to be in a special mood for it.
