Editorial Reviews

George Burns and Gracie Allen are perhaps the most charming duo in the history of television. Even those not familiar with the straight-man routine of George or the hilariously dimwitted antics of Gracie will warm to these episodes. In the first show, George and Grace are spending Christmas with their ever-present neighbors, the Mortons. The confusion begins when Harry Morton books a room for his father (whom his wife, Blanche, cannot stand), just as Blanche Morton is enlisting Grace to help book a room for her brother (whom Harry cannot stand). As is bound to happen when Grace becomes involved, everything becomes muddled and soon there is no room and two guests coming. The highlight of this episode is Grace's foray into service, dressing up as a maid in a misguided attempt to secure an extra room. The second episode, funnier and more charming than the first, finds George in the "pokey." As the narrator of the events of the few days before, George recounts an almost Shakespearean comedy of errors. Blanche and Gracie conspire to trick their husbands into buying exactly what they want for Christmas, a jeweled watch and a pearl necklace. Yet again, George is caught in the whirlpool of confusion when Gracie does a favor for her son. With elegantly timed precision, Grace Allen delivers her lines, as George expertly provides the material that will spark Gracie's humor. These episodes are the perfect Christmas treat, but are sure to make you laugh year round. Say "Merry Christmas," Gracie. --Amanda Powter

From the back cover

Company for Christmas. Gracie goes undercover as a hotel cleaning woman to make room for out-of-town guests and turns the yuletide upside down! The Mortons are expecting company for Christmas. Trouble is, Harry has failed to notify Blanche of his father's arrival, and Blanche is afraid to tell Harry that her brother is coming to visit. When Gracie throws herself in the middle of things and deck the halls with more mayhem, the merriment really begins! Christmas in Jail. Twas the week before Christmas and all through the house, Gracie is scheming, to trick George, her spouse. It seems that Gracie has visions of a pearl necklace dancing in her head. Deciding to give fate a holiday helping hand, Gracie enlists Blanche's help in tricking George into making it a pearl-white Christmas at the Burns and Allen house. But the Yuletide takes a turn when Gracie's pearls prove phony, and George spends Christmas in the pokey!

4.0 out of 5 stars Two fine Christmas episodes from Burns & Allen's TV show, December 10, 1999

This review is from: Burns and Allen Christmas - Company for Christmas / Christmas in Jail [VHS] (VHS Tape)
George and Gracie are in good form in these two clever, Christmas-themed episodes. Fun for old-movie fans, too, with guest appearances by familiar character actors Douglass Dumbrille and George E. Stone. The video producers have noticeably re-edited the shows, adding quick fades to bridge the gaps. But the frequent fades are only a minor drawback, because the quality is superior. These prints have never looked better.

This is a definite holiday classic video, you'll laugh at Gracie's antics & George's commentary. Anything with Burns & Allen is sure to put a smile on your face. They sure don't make 'em like this anymore. Highly enjoyable and a must-have for your comedy classics collection.
