From the Author

The initial seed for this book was planted in the early 1990's when Ms. Pennington spent three years in Pittsburgh, working in feature film production. Scenes were often shot in the cavernous, abandoned steel mills and factories in and around the city.  She was fascinated by stories of the city's survival after the demise of its great steel industry. After fifteen years as a writer and producer of radio and television advertising campaigns and documentaries, she finally put pen to paper.

Scenes were often shot in the cavernous, abandoned steel mills and factories in and around the city. I love stories that show you that "family" is so much more than your relatives.

This is one of the best books I have read recently. From the beginning I was on pins and needles as the story weaves its way through Farley James' idyllic and then suddenly tumultuous life. The characters become your friends and family.

A compelling, must read!

This book is good. Period. The writer was able to throw together a diverse cast of characters, each one with his/her individual demons and make you fall in love. Not since Fried Green Tomatoes have I cheered and jeered so loudly while reading a book! But, in addition, this book is about family, tragedy and love. I finished this book in a matter of days and I miss Farley and William! I’m not one to write a review, but I loved this book.

From the quote from Edna St. Vincent Millay (a gritty, full-of-life woman and author herself) to the moment I turned to the last page and had a tearful farewell, this initial book by author Penny Pennington held my interest. Appealing to the intellect, endearing to the heart, and truth straight from the soul, this novel explores external and internal issues that everyone, women in particular, will resonate with.

I have already gifted this book to myself and two dear, dear friends. Consider it for your Book Club's next selection. Don't be the last on your block to own/read it.

But, be aware, you'll lose sleep as this story makes it impossible to put the book down until you find yourself dropping it in your lap from exhaustion. So, put on a pot of coffee, snuggle into your favorite reading chair, couch, corner of the house, and enjoy!

After the first page I was hooked on and could appreciate the rich characters in this book. The story took me through an array of emotions as I laughed, cried and had my heart strings tugged. Penny McCann Pennington's first novel is one that I'll eagerly recommend when discussing first time novelists.

The book follows a young girl (Farley) and her brother (William) after tragedy strikes. It reminded me of the importance of family and how the human spirit mends. I fell in love with the characters, especially the love between Farley and William. Full of emotion and great descriptions, it is an easy to read, heartwarming book that pulls you in from the beginning!

Wow! Thoroughly enjoyed It Burns A Lovely Light. The author was able to put me in the book itself with her excellent descriptions of time, place and circumstance. The sense of foreboding kept me thinking about what was right around the corner. An ending that brought tears to my eyes but happiness for Farley and those that brought Bridge Manor to life! Not normally my type of read but was not able to put it down. Great book!
