anybody interested in free jazz/avante garde music needs to listen to these 2 giants. andrew cyrille is one of the fathers of free jazz drumming and jimmy lyons is, in my opinion, the only saxaphonist to truly understand cecil taylor's music. these two have such a strong rapport anything they do together will sound great... and very original. the way they organize their improvisations is unique, thus the avante garde label. no matter how complicated/sophisticated their work becomes, it is always brimming with raw energy, emotion, and excitement. while lyons does use overblowing, screams, multiphonics, and other techniques associated with free jazz, he doesn't simply blow hard and wiggle his fingers. more often than not, he plays disjointed, abstract lines that sound like atonal charlie parker. cyrille is equally innovative. i'd write more but i'm tired of typing. suffice it to say, this recording is a great illustration of the merits of these two musical giants.
