Book Description

May 2, 2006
From America’s most beloved comedic actress and the star of Desperate Housewives comes a personal, heartfelt, and often very funny manifesto on life, love, and the lessons we all need to learn -- and unlearn -- on the road to happiness

Teri Hatcher secured her place in America’s heart when she stood up to accept her Golden Globe for Best Actress and declared herself a "has-been" on national television. That moment showcased her down-to-earth, self-deprecating style -- and her frank openness about the ups and downs she’s experienced in life and work.

But what the world might not have seen that night is that Teri’s self-acceptance is the hard-won effort of a single mother with all the same struggles most women have to juggle -- life, love, bake sale cookies, and dying cats. Now, in the hope that her foibles and insights might inspire and motivate other women, Teri opens up about the little moments that have sustained her through good times and bad.

From the everyday (like the importance of letting your daughter spill her macaroni so she knows it’s okay to make mistakes) to the rare (a rendezvous with a humpback whale -- and no, he was not a suitor), the message at the heart of Burnt Toast -- that happiness and success are choices that we owe it to ourselves to make -- is sure to resonate with women everywhere.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

In 2005, Teri Hatcher won a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award, and was nominated for an Emmy for her role as Susan Mayer on the hit TV show Desperate Housewives. Hatcher starred as Lois Lane in the TV series Lois & Clark, and has appeared in many feature films, including Spy Kids and as Bond girl Paris Carver in Tomorrow Never Dies. A California native, she lives in Los Angeles with her daughter, Emerson Rose.

From AudioFile

Burnt toast was the least of Hatcher's problems, it seems, since before her role as a desperate housewife came along, she was actually living the part. Hatcher's career ups and downs--from being a mermaid on "Love Boat" to a Golden Globe winner and an also-ran at the Emmys--are narrated with humor and chagrin by Deanna Hurst. The abridgment runs smoothly as the memoir moves from small sermons on aging, parenting, and self-respect to accounts of movie star moments, dating, and the challenges of handling success. The entire work is revealing and amusing. Hatcher herself reads the introduction, and her voice demonstrates how well Hurst captures the spirit and tone of her memoir. 5.0 out of 5 stars Great read for women everywhere!!!, May 5, 2006
This review is from: Burnt Toast: And Other Philosophies of Life (Hardcover)
I rushed out to buy this book the day it came out and I'm almost finished reading it. Wow! This book speaks to women so much! I can really identify with Teri's words and thoughts, and I'm sure most other women can too. I guarantee, if you are a woman - you will be able to relate to this book in some way at least! At least ONE of Teri's stories of self-doubt, marital issues, dating, success, failure, divorce, motherhood, and just life in general will speak to you. Been a fan of Teri's since the very early 90's - so I may be a teensy-bit biased - but I'm telling you I just can't put this book down! It is an insight into Teri's soul but more importantly it is also a plea for all of us women to stop accepting the "burnt toast!" Definitely recommend it to women everywhere!! Bravo to Teri for putting herself out there - in more ways that I could ever be brave enough to do - to get this message out!! She is a true inspiration as a woman and a human being. Give this book a read ladies, I'm willing to bet you won't regret it!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not what you might expect..., May 15, 2006

ronco (Burton, Oh United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Burnt Toast: And Other Philosophies of Life (Hardcover)
I picked this book up on impulse, because I'm a Teri Hatcher fan, I suppose, and I wondered what this celebrity had to say to the rest of us. I had seen only minimal promotion - didn't know the book was directed to women. I immediately saw my mom in the "burnt toast" analogy, and continued. Her "philosphy" is simple and down-to-earth. I enjoyed her self-deprecating style and the anecdotes that expose her as a real human being. (If that makes her a "head case", as another reviewer states, then I'm in that club, too.) She comes off as an admirable single mom, much like several I know personally. I laughed out loud through much of the book. Ms. Hatcher successfully carries us along on her journey of discovery, allowing us to be inspired along with her as she plans for a better future for herself and her daughter. Highly recommended...

5.0 out of 5 stars HONESTLY a great book...I was skeptical but THIS IS GOOD!, May 8, 2006

Thank you Teri Hatcher for exposing yourself as truly HUMAN! Your intimate book was a BREATHE of fresh air into the REALITY of both CELEBRITY & WOMANHOOD alike!---Celebrities are just regular people with everyday struggles....especially of the most common type! I thought this book was REAL & INSIGHTFUL! It is courageous and true. (*note-especially coming from a CELEBRITY. Teri IS beautiful & sucessful yet still craves what we all do on basic levels. This means to me that REGARDLESS of what we accumulate, it is our own self-worth that we "crown" ourselves with in riches. (And to the rest of you....I am not her friend, I do watch Desperate Housewives....I was not paid to leave this review...I rarely ever leave reviews and am an avid book reader......) THIS IS A WONDERFUL Book!
