5.0 out of 5 stars Great sprouter with 3 packs of 1 oz. seeds
Well first off, I usually won't buy a thing without reading the reviews. I bought 2 sprouters, the other the Thompson & Morgan Seed Sprouter that sells for around the same amount of money but doesn't include seed. Being that this may be its first review, I'll try to give as much detail as I can. Its 5 1/4 inches square which doesn't measure too big but it seems larger...

3.0 out of 5 stars okay, bit of a hassle
I started sprouting for the first time with this Burpee Seed Sprouter and a Kitchen Crop sprouter Kitchen Crop Sprouter - 3 Tray. This Burpee sprouter is definitely less convenient because the sprouts grow through the holes and are difficult to get out, plus small seeds and seed hulls get stuck in the holes and make cleaning harder. I found a way to still use this Burpee...

Well first off, I usually won't buy a thing without reading the reviews. I bought 2 sprouters, the other the Thompson & Morgan Seed Sprouter that sells for around the same amount of money but doesn't include seed. Being that this may be its first review, I'll try to give as much detail as I can. Its 5 1/4 inches square which doesn't measure too big but it seems larger. The trays all nest well. The other sprouter is slightly larger by about a half inch on all sides(and the color is different). Other than that they are about the same. The top on the other may nest a bit smoother but its really not a problem. The seeds that came are 3 pks of 1 oz each as follows: Broccoli, Mung Beans, and Zesty Mix(Broccoli, Radish & Cress). Most all seeds sprouted within 2 days. I only used half a packet on each level. For under $10 and it includes the seeds you can't go wrong if you are just getting into sprouting.

I found a way to still use this Burpee sprouter - I start the sprouts in the Kitchen Crop, then when they are nearly ready to eat I rinse away the hulls and break up any root clumps, and then I move them over to the Burpee sprouter and let them finish growing. It works okay for that, but a bit of a hassle for start-to-finish sprouts.

4.0 out of 5 stars My first sprouter!, January 15, 2009
This review is from: Burpee Seed Sprouter + 3 Types Sprouting Seeds (Kitchen)
I picked up this sprouter at Home Depot for the same price. Yes, it's a little expensive when you consider the actual item, but at least it came with three seed packets. This device is fairly easy to use and works well, BUT the included instructions could have been way better. I did a lot of reading on Sprout People's website, and due to their tips and advice, growing sprouts is pretty easy. If you want this device to work well, definitely check out their website.

This device will yield a lot of sprouts and it's easy to assemble, use and clean. Remember to rinse often, and soak the seeds overnight before putting them in the sprouter.

This item should pay for itself in no time, esp if you can find a cheap place to get seeds. I would recommend this device to anyone - it's so simple if you make sure to rinse, shake out excess water and soak seeds overnight first.

This sprouter grows the sprouts ok, if you can get the small seed to stay in the sprouter because of the drain holes being in the bottom instead of a syphon to the side like I have used before small seeds go right through the holes and once the seeds remaining start sprouting they grow through the tray. It does do well for Mung Beans and larger seeds. It is much smaller then I expected but thats not a deciding point. Smaller seeds grow much better in a jar then this sprouter

4.0 out of 5 stars Does the job well if you drain carefully, June 28, 2009

My sprouter arrived with one of the clear trays cracked but I didn't notice until I had already used it. The crack does not affect the performance but does indicate how cheaply made this thing is. Still, I can grow myself several days worth of healthy sprouts in about three days (takes longer in winter when the house temp is lower) with this device. After using up the free seeds I have only purchased and grown organic broccoli seeds. Broccoli seeds are tiny but they do not fall through the tray openings so that's a good thing. I put two tablespoons of seeds in the base of the sprouter with the lid on top for overnight soaking before I begin the sprouting process. My first couple of crops had a strong odor about them and after reading up on sprouting I figured out they were not draining thoroughly between rinsings. Here's what I do now and have complete success with every crop - rinse twice a day and use clean fingers to push the seeds and later the sprouts around under the water to assure that everything is getting its fair share of the fresh water. After you rinse use your fingers and/or the water to force the seeds/sprouts over to one side of the tray. Next, leave the trays in a tilted position so that a lot of the water drains away from the seeds/sprouts and into the empty side of the tray. I have those flat wire racks in my kitchen sink so they are perfect for this purpose - the top edge of the tray rests against the side of the sink and the bottom edge of the tray is kept in place by the wire rack. After they've drained in this manner for ten minutes or so I pick the trays up and do a little tapping to knock off more excess water and reassemble the sprouter - first the base, then a tray, another tray, and the lid.

This is a great price for a seed sprouter. The instructions are pretty clear. Be aware, you really do need to rinse the sprouts twice a day to keep the "funk" smell down. The broccoli seeds that come with it are good, but just a note: they are from China. You be the judge if that bothers you or not. I would prefer a domestic source in the future for refills. One supplier sells them in bulk here : [...]

This was my first attempt at sprouting. The Burpee Seed Sprouter, while not a very substantial sprouter (made of plastic), is still very easy to use and included a variety of seeds to try. Instructions were good and this is a great value for the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars an inexpesive way to get good sprouts, August 22, 2009
This review is from: Burpee Seed Sprouter + 3 Types Sprouting Seeds (Kitchen)
The seeds provided sprouted well. Some wash through to bottom tray, but I think it's virtually impossible to make perfect sized straining holes to keep all the seeds in yet not be too difficult to clean. Sure was nice to have a fresh home grown item in the dead of winter.

I purchased this quite some time ago, but havent had to buy another sprouter since. I've never needed a larger size, the two tier grows more than enough sprouts to satisfy our needs. The set came with a nice addition of seeds that were really fresh and allowed me to test taste a few of the more popular varieties. This is a great starter set!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good sprouter but needs better instructions, April 19, 2011
This review is from: Burpee Seed Sprouter + 3 Types Sprouting Seeds (Kitchen)
Overall I believe this purchase was a good investment. I just wish that it came with much more detailed instructions. The instructions read put a "small amount" of seeds into the container. Please specify what a "small amount" is!!! A 1oz packet? Because thats what I did! Half the seeds did not sprout & rotted causing the ones that did grow to smell & taste funny. Is half a packet a "small amount"? I'll find out on my next try...
I would have given it 2 stars if not for the good customer service. The customer service personnel stayed on the phone for a good while looking for instructions for me and found nothing more than I did so she sent me a new packet of broccoli sprouts to try again. Here's comes my second shot =)
