Book Description

080612170X 978-0806121703 September 15, 1989

"This immense book, by a noted bibliographer of the West, is beyond question the fairest, most complete and most learned evaluation of printed references to western outlaws to appear until now....It will stand for many years, solid as a rock amid the flooding maelstrom of western myth and legend, pointing up the truth about those men of the past who lived by their wits and their guns. It will be impossible for anyone studying that era and such men to do so without reference to this volume."—Los Angeles Times

"Adams turns again to the books and histories of the western gunmen and outlaws and critically examines 425 titles, most of which rate as ’burs’ under his saddle. Ramon Adams’ plea is that the writers must stop compounding each other’s errors into legend. In this book, with great skill and without malice, he has pointed out past mistakes. His book should be in the essential baggage of every writer on western outlaws and on every library shelf."—American West

"The value of this book to writers and historians of the badman tradition cannot be overestimated, for Adams has replaced rumors, myths, and falsehoods with documented historical facts. It is a book for all conscientious students of and writers on the American West; henceforth, any writer of ’authentic Western history’ who refuses to check with Adams should be, as the judge said to Billy the Kid in one legend, 'hanged by the neck until dead, dead, dead.'"—Southwest Review

About the Author

Ramon F. Adams, Western bibliophile and lexicographer of Dallas, knows the lore and language of the range as perhaps no other man does today. He was the ideal choice to arrange Bob Kennon's story for publication. Mr. Kennon, he says, "through in his eighties, had a keen mind and deep interest in the history of Montana, he began sending me the story of his life, more material, in fact, than I could use." That he was made good use of that material, this book attests.

5.0 out of 5 stars For SERIOUS students of Western history only!, February 10, 2011
This review is from: Burs Under the Saddle: A Second Look at Books and Histories of the West (Paperback)
This 600-page reference examines 424 well-known or standard Western historical books. It will especially appeal to readers already familiaar with the works of Burns, Cunningham, Lake, Myers, Sandoz, Vestal, and others, most of which remain in print and are often cited by later writers. Though popular, these books contain many geographic and chronological errors, highly improbable horseback journeys, and totally impossible feats of marksmanship. In his critiques, Adams is sometimes gentle, sometimes harsh, and often humorous, but he is particularly perceptive in his analysis of "one of the most prolific sources of misinformation, the old-timer(who)depends on a faulty memory, hearsay, or the tall tales he has heard around the campfire. If he places his completed effort in the hands of an editor, the latter is frequently utterly ignorant of the West." I recently read such a memoir, written when the author was 78. The editor - if there was one - did nothing to resolve numerous internal inconsistencies or even check the dates, some of which were obviously wrong! The Adams reader should note this book was published in 1964; thus it cannot address books published after that date, though the books cited continue to appear in footnotes and bibliographies in later books. Also, though the author credits other scholars by name and frequently cites primary sources such as birth records, court testimony, and census data, he does not document most of his assertions of fact. (That many footnotes might double the size of the book!) Of course the reader can do his own research, and in a few cases the author's data have been superseded by more modern scholarship. But that in no way invalidates his criticism of "the constant rewriting of inaccurate history" herein. Ramon Adams wrote several Western histories of his own. He died in 1976.

Although this is a most entertaining book, giving a good picture of life on the range and employing the colorful language of the cowboy, its references to many of the characters it mentions, especially the lawless ones, are unreliable. Read the first page
