5.0 out of 5 stars Surprising amount of lather!
I will admit I was a bit hesitant when I bought this shampoo. Sure I along with countless others have fallen for the other Burt's Bees products, but shampoo? I was looking for paraben free products, not to mention Ammonium lauryl sulfate. I bought this product because it is the "safest" and healthiest shampoo (per info on http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/) that I can find in stores at anything near a reasonable price. I also bought the conditioner.

I have tried both products now for several days, and overall I am unpleased. Here are my thoughts:

I will admit I was a bit hesitant when I bought this shampoo. Sure I along with countless others have fallen for the other Burt's Bees products, but shampoo? I was looking for paraben free products, not to mention Ammonium lauryl sulfate. Anyway I stumbled across this shampoo and while I am not nuts about the smell, it doesn't last long enough to worry about. I'm not saying it's a bad scent, it just doesn't suit me. This is the only downside of this shampoo in my opinion. It has a wonderful lather! I was shocked by the amount of lather actually. My hair is shiny and it FEELS healthy as opposed to just LOOKING healthy. And for the first time in my life I can comb through my hair quickly after a shower. I feel it is important to mention that my hair is almost to my knees and wavy. Being able to comb is like a dream. It takes me a couple of minutes with no snags versus spending a half an hour of tugging and pain. I agree with the previous poster about a little goes a long way. You need less than you think.

To sum it up...try it if you don't want to use shampoo with parabens, and want gorgeous hair!

5.0 out of 5 stars so fresh & so clean!, May 14, 2007
Love this product -- cleans just the right amount (not too aggressive) & smells fantastic. I bought it primarilly because of the wonderful scent, but am pleased with how well it performs. Plus, I feel great knowing it doesn't have sodium laurel sulfate (a known skin irritant & common lathering ingredient in shampoos) or other harmful chemicals in it.

5.0 out of 5 stars No lather does not mean bad shampoo, October 17, 2008
This review is from: Burt's Bees Super Shiny Shampoo, Grapefruit & Sugar Beet, 12 oz (Kitchen)
I read on a website about the dangerous chemicals found in quite a few personal hygene products and decided to try a few that were listed with minimal harmful chemicals to no harmul chemicals. On that list was several Burt's Bees products and all the shampoo & conditioners.

I chose this one because out of a limited selection at one of the local stores it was either this or a volumizing (fluff hair for me) version.

I'm glad I read other reviews that spoke about a lack of lather and one review who actually noted the chemical used to make those "rich lather" shampoos because if I hadn't, I might have misunderstood this product.

Yes, there is almost no lather, but you won't miss it for the quality job it does for your hair. The shampoo not only rinses completely away, it takes off a lot of the residue left behind by other products/shampoo/conditioners/environmental stresses. What it leaves behind is a faint scent and squeaky clean hair. I honestly don't remember the last time my hair was this healthy. I've been using this shampoo with a Burt's Bees conditioner solely for about a month now. I'm amazed that the bottle has lasted that long, but you really don't need much despite having long hair. I will keep buying Burt's shampoos and conditioners and I would recommend them not only for the fact that they are ecologically friendly but because they are darn good products.

Pros:
-easy to find compared to other "safe" and healthy shampoos
-priced lower than some competitors
-recyclable (not recycled!) bottle
-excellent, exciting fragrance (this was the best part of the product)
-thick texture, didn't fall off my hands
-shampoo does actually lather compared to other "safe" shampoos
-hair felt clean (too clean?) after shampooing, which is the goal (I haven't noticed a residue yet)

Cons (major cons):
-shampoo is soooo difficult to distribute through the hair, as it does not have a silky texture, so I ended up having to use a larger quantity of shampoo compared to conventional shampoos (NOTE: I have short, chin-length hair, and once I put the shampoo in, I couldn't move it from root to tip, I had to add more)
-shampoo left my hair feeling like straw, so that I couldn't even run my hands through it (again, very short hair)
-the companion conditioner (as a side note) does not seem to repair the straw-like texture which the shampoo imparts, so I think the conditioner is more worthless than the shampoo
-shampoo is considerably more expensive and comes in a smaller size compared to conventional shampoos

I have spent too much money on this shampoo/conditioner set to abandon it, so I will keep using it. Also, I don't have a viable shampoo alternative yet, and I don't want to go back to conventional products (on principle).

One way I have dealt with the poor texture the shampoo provides is to get a better conditioner. The best "natural" brand I have found available I had to buy through the internet (which I try to avoid) is Nature's Gate Lavender and Aloe Organic conditioner, which has a decent rating on the Cosmetics Database (although many other Nature's Gate products are not as well rated - be careful).

This conditioner fixes the problems of the shampoo, so it is livable. I'm thinking about trying Dr. Bronner's Magic Soap as a shampoo instead, as it has done a really great job on my hands after a couple weeks. The search continues...

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice scent and good lather!, January 3, 2008
This review is from: Burt's Bees Super Shiny Shampoo, Grapefruit & Sugar Beet, 12 oz (Kitchen)
I'm no cosmetic expert. In fact I have absolutely zero interest in cosmetics (and don't even wear them) so you know I'm not someone who buys beauty products for fun and for the novelty of it. But I live in the desert where the dry air desiccates your skin so I sometimes have to pick up product for skin care. I got attracted to the Burt's Bees products via their cute and creative in-store displays and then ending up trying a wide range of their products.

I like this shampoo. It has a wonderful smell as you put it on your hair: spicy and citrus-y. Men in particular will be relieved to know that the scent is subtle and doesn't last. It lathers up richly and feels gentle on the scalp. It doesn't seem to leave a soap residue on your hair like some shampoos can over a period of weeks. Plus, a little bit goes a long way so that you can make this product last.

3.0 out of 5 stars Leaves buildup, not softness, February 10, 2009
By

This review is from: Burt's Bees Super Shiny Shampoo, Grapefruit & Sugar Beet, 12 oz (Kitchen)
I have recently been trying to go "green" with my cosmetics and beauty products. While this shampoo isn't 100% natural, it's pretty darn close. Having read reviews both on here and on Burt's Bees' Web site (biased I know, but still...), I was excited to give this one a try.

At first I loved it, and, contrary to other reviewers, I actually liked the scent. However, I noticed that my hair didn't stay clean as long as it did with other, more synthetic shampoos. I figured it was because my hair wasn't being stipped of its "natural oils." However, within a week, the shampoo was no longer lathering quite as well and my hair felt almost sticky while trying to rinse the shampoo out. Even more gross, I noticed this white fuzzy stuff in my hair brush. Turns out it was buildup.

Now, I have one of those massaging shower heads that you can turn to various levels, so I decided to experiment with more powerful sprays and holding the shower head closer to my scalp to make sure I was completely rinsing the shampoo. That didn't seem to help at all. I'm figuring it has something to do with the shampoo reacting to the hard water, but since I'm living in an apartment, I can't exactly install a water softener to change that.

I read up a little bit more on using natural shampoos and soap in hard water areas and some people suggest using vinegar or baking soda rinses, but that didn't seem to work for me. So I switched back to my synthetic Pantene shampoo, and my hair is once again soft and smooth. I might try using the Burt's Bees one most of the time and then just use my synthetic one as a "clarifying" shampoo once a week.

I can say that I do love the Grapefruit and Sugarbeet conditioner though!

Like their body washes, a little goes a long way. You lather and rinse and your hair doesn't have that residue left....you can tell the difference the first time you use it. The scent is great too! If you have really dry hair then get the conditioner as well!

3.0 out of 5 stars Allergy Sufferer, July 17, 2011
This review is from: Burt's Bees Super Shiny Shampoo, Grapefruit & Sugar Beet, 12 oz (Kitchen)
I bought Burt's Bees Grapefuit and Sugar Beet shampoo and conditioner after reading about it on a sulphate-free blog. I believe that my regular shampoo and conditioner were causing my skin to breakout. Anyway, after the first wash with BB, I noticed that I kept wanting to rinse my hair, feeling like something wouldn't rinse out.

After gettig out of the shower and towel drying my hair it felt brittle and dry. With having said that, after I dried my hair it was soft and shiny, like I haven't seen it in years! I was so excited. My skin was starting to clear up almost immediately. I thought I had the miracle shampoo and condidioner!

Well, after the second wash I started to notice an itch, not bad just there. After the third wash that is where things went really wrong. My scalp started to burn, it was horrible and I called the BB representative after soaking my head in cool water in the sink, they were super nice and suggested I call my doctor and discontinue any use. I ultimately had to wash with my other shampoo to get the burning to calm down!

It dawned on me as I was working out in my garden the next day and I brushed up against some plants and my arm broke out (very common to me) I thought since I have so many plant allergies, why in the world would I think a plant based product would be ok to lather all over my head! I will continue my search for a combination shampoo with no sulphates and not so many plant based products....

Did I like my hair with BB? YES!
Would I continue to use it if I wasn't allergic? YES
Would I recommend it to another friend with allergies of plants/trees? NO

I was so excited to use my new shampoo...i got it in the shower and put it in my hair...it made my hair feel brittle.
After i got out and my hair dried, my hair was for sure shiney, but i think that this shampoo is better as a clarifying shampoo for build-up...not for everyday use. :)

I like the scent - enough citrus to seem fresh. But without conditioner, this shampoo leaves my hair feeling entirely too dry. I like other Burt's Bees products. But this one, while having solid potential, needs some tweaking.
