Red Hot Smokin' Blues!,

This review is from: Bury Him at the Crossroads (Audio CD)
I've seen Janiva many times live, sometimes in small clubs and sometimes at Blues Festivals and she ALWAYS puts on a fantastic performance. If there is a better female blues belter out there I haven't heard her. This cd is a departure from her previous ones as this is a more stripped down sound. Her voice has never been better and I think this may be my favorite cd of hers. If you want to hear what a real blues singer sounds like buy any or all of her CDs and you won't be disappointed. Also, if you ever get an opportunity to catch a live show you'll be glad you did. By the way my favorite reviewer on Amazon is Avalondon, please send me an email.

Janiva's best so far,

I don't need 75+ words to say this is the best CD by a female blues singer I've heard in a long, long time. Whether she won a Handy Award or not, she deserves at least one, and soon!

I stumbled upon Janiva's music when Alligator records sent me the opportunity to buy a autographed copy of a about to be released CD by Janiva Magness called "what love will do". I read some reviews and thought I'll check her out.
When I placed her CD on after arrival I almost fell out of my chair. I was a resident of The French Quarter of New Orleans for years and have heard great female Blues singers, Etta James is the best of this generation I had thought, my all time favorite, Now Janiva Magness stands next to Etta, she is a good, as inspirational, great to listen to, witty and just one fine Blues Artist I now own every one of Janiva's CD's and am waiting anxiously for her next release. If you love Etta James then you are going to go wild over Janeva in the same way. Buy her music and you I promise will never regret it, Every song is terrific like Etta, She slips no half hearted music in, It's her music and voice from the soul..She gives you her all every time she sings a new song... This artist will be never be forgotten and I feel will one day be placed in the Blues Hall of Fame and considered one of the finest Female Blues singers of our generation..

Reminds me of,.....,

...lots of time spent in off the highway, weathered board roadhouses where the patrons had bad teeth, pocket pistols and work soiled pick em up trucks parked in the dirt lot. Sharp and pungent smells of stale beer and missed urinals, but with generally good Bar B-cue & world class blues music.
Janiva Magness is a walking, blues singing cinema realite; a history of what bad can occur to a child and what great can happen when that child matures. A wonderful CD; another example of her brilliance. No sophistication but a salve for the soul.

awesome voice!,

Janiva Magness is a new discovery for me and I am just loving her. In a small way she reminds me a bit of Rory Block and that is a compliment. This was the first cd I heard and of course I had to read her story. If you have a chance google her, her story is amazing and inspiring this lady has lived through hell and back again and I figure that if anyone knows the blues she does. The lady is a gift. I can't wait to see her perform.

"Bury Him At The Crossroads" is another great CD by Janiva Magness. Ms. Magness has created an expectation of delivering gut-renching, heartfelf vocals that cause the listener to feel and emphathize with every note.
Songs like "The Soul of A Man," "Bury Him At The Crossroads," "Less and Less of You," and "Eat The Lunch That You Brought" allows Magness to display talent that brings her to the forefront of contemporary blues vocalists, but also positioners her with the all-time greats.

Janiva Magness is a fabulous blues singer. She delivers deep emotion in every song. The style of this cd is more towards Delta type blues especially on the track,' Ain't No Way To Get Along'. There is not one bad song to be found on this cd. This gal knows how to feel her music and make you feel it too.

I ordered Janiva Magness "Bury him at the Crossroads. Marked and wrapped and marked NEW. Inside the digipak was gouged with some kind of object, plastic holding CD broken in several places and pieces of paper filled it. The CD has a gouge in it. I wouldn't have sold this at all, so if this is their standards, never again. I can't find a way to contact them(LOL),so I'll just buy again from someone more reputable. If they sell something marked NEW, do not believe it. I don't what kind of person would do such wanton destruction of a digi-pac, but to re-sell it is unconscionable.
