Not your typical baseball book--this book is a must-have for the casual fan and baseball fanatic alike! It is full of interesting tidbits and trivia, not to mention a little scandal! Burial locations are provided, as well as excellent photos of many of the players mentioned and some of their final resting places!

This review is from: Bury My Heart at Cooperstown: Salacious, Sad, And Surreal Deaths in the History of Baseball (Paperback)
Frank Russo has put together a very interesting compilation of baseball facts and personalities. He gives insights and information about a number of players I've heard of and introduced me to a number I hadn't heard of. Anyone who likes baseball, particularly those who are interested in the personalities behind the players, will find this book to be well worth the read.

Just finished reading ~ Wow !!! Six stars wouldn't be enough !
I've been involved with almost every aspect of our National Pastime since 1952. Playing , Coaching , managing , scouting ,PR work , fundraising , etc. etc. etc. I consider myself to be well rounded , and objective in all Baseball related matters. That being said , I want to personally thank Mr. Russo for this wonderful contribution to a barely addressed subject. The book was thoroughly entertaining and informative. I actually had a tough time putting it down between readings ! The stories are awesome ~ the info is great , the forerunner of any in the field. This book should be enjoyed by all Baseball fans , and also used as a fine teaching tool to educate the younger fans about heretofore non-addressed info. Maybe a sequel in the future ??? UNIQUE and ENTERTAINING it surely is. Thanks so much for your time and considerable efforts Mr. Russo

This book is an excellent example of baseball research. One can only imagine the time it took to locate all of these facts and stories. "Bury My Heart at Cooperstown" is truly an interesting and captivating read. Frank Russo and Gene Racz did an outstanding job in writing and compiling this book.

Don't foul out...read this book!,
This review is from: Bury My Heart at Cooperstown: Salacious, Sad, And Surreal Deaths in the History of Baseball (Paperback)
Frank Russo has come up with something here that is very rare these days: A unique and very interesting subject! Much more than a sports book, it's a story of human triumphs...and frailties. Where there is accomplishment, there is, at times, unfortunately, sadness. People of note and achievement inevitably being...people. You'll read this book in one sitting, because you'll have no choice...you can't put it down. Thank you, Mr. Russo!

This review is from: Bury My Heart at Cooperstown: Salacious, Sad, And Surreal Deaths in the History of Baseball (Paperback)
This book is a fun read. I recommend it to anyone who loves baseball or is simply interested in good stories. Superbly researched, it's filled with so many rare tidbits they practically fall out of the book and on to the floor. Russo knows baseball and it shows in this work.

An immense amount of research had to be undertaken for this project, as the better part of the players researched were not Hall of Famers, nor media attention grabbers in their playing days. That's what makes this book so
unique, and such a fascinating piece of work. Nowhere else will you find what is contained in this book, and I, for one, found it thoroughly enjoyable and interesting to read. This simply HAD to be a labor of love, and I applaud the authors for their methods of fact gathering and presentation. For the true baseball fan, or the die-hard genealogist, I can only hope that someday there'll be a sequel forthcoming.

Diamonds and Death,

This review is from: Bury My Heart at Cooperstown: Salacious, Sad, And Surreal Deaths in the History of Baseball (Paperback)
Death, the final frontier, these are the voyages or at least the 3 hour cruises outlining the final out of many men who were the genesis of what we now know as modern day baseball. For steeltraps, trivia lovers, sports buffs or those with a necrological bent, this one's for you.Cool statistics with just enough to whet your appetite without being vapid and a manner of death, coupled with colorful background, gives you a fast read and some extra things to think about. Socially, these guys were apart from their families and loved ones for long stretches of time. This could explain how easily bases, bats, balls and blue serge suits quickly led to bars, booze, broads and bullits. The authors deserve alot of credit just for being able to "dig up" the info on these players.I mean heck, some of these guys have been moulding in the grave for over 100 years.Thats alot of hard work and dedication, obviously a labor of love.
So, if you can identify with a hunchback, practically feel your liver throb from boozy tales or thank modern medicine for curing a pesty spirochete that led many players down the third base line and into the nearest asylum for the insane, this book is for you. From a psychiatric viewpoint, many of these players should have picked another line of work.Stressors were handled differently then often leading to tragic, painful and horrific deaths. It seems that Americas favorite pastime may have had a hidden tagline that is, "welcome to hard times". In any event, this book is a welcome addition to my library and I'm sure it will be in your's too.But don't take my word for it. Buy it and read it for yourself.

The rest of the Baseball Story,
By Torbert (Burlington, NJ) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bury My Heart at Cooperstown: Salacious, Sad, And Surreal Deaths in the History of Baseball (Paperback)
Baseball has been captivating the mind of America for over 130 years. We hold in amazement those who climb the heights of the sport to reach the major league level, even if they only get into 1 game. Thats 1 game more then the rest of us. Yet, after the cheers of the crowd dies down, and the player hangs up his spike for the last time, a vast majority of them fade back into society and are largely forgotten. This book, unlike any other, tells us the rest of the story of these ball players. How they live and died gives a final account of the lives that more often then not are similiar to our lives, except we never played in front of cheering crowds on the diamond.
To those of us who see that baseball is not merely sports, but a human endeavor and human struggle, Russo's and Racz's wonderfully fleshes out the stories after the Story. It brings back long forgotten players, some dead over 100 years. It puts a human face on the sport and gives us a real sense that today's game was built in the efforts of men big and small. Each story of life and death in this book reminds us all that everyone who gets to step up to that plate in a Major League game had to deal with what we all deal with once the game is over. Its a wonderful read. |
