Biography

Formed in Harrisonburg, Virginia, in 1996 and have since relocated to Richmond, Virginia. This innovative quartet sprang out of such bands as Sleepytime Trio, The Weak Link Breaks, and Bughummer.

The foursome have truly come a long way, displaying that they are not afraid to take their sound to new limits with interesting instrumentation (e.g., piano, cello, vibraphone) while at the same time… Read more in Amazon's Engine Down Store

Editorial Reviews

Pitchfork Media

Even at their quietest, the Engine Down of To Bury Within the Sound still rocks harder than most could ever imagine.

Product Description

Whereas Under the Pretense of Present Tense was a perfect record to drive to, To Bury Within the Sound is something less forceful, something more appropriate to drift off into sleep with. The songs are less immediate and in your face, more slowly evolving and passive. This album demonstrates Engine Down at the top of their songwriting ability: putting together ambient sounds and beautiful interlocking clean guitar melodies, experimenting with different sounds such as keys and complex shifting song structures into something full and gorgeous. ~ Blake Butler, All Music Guide

if i had to take 5 cds with me to a deserted island, you better believe this would be one of them. I didn't think anything could be better than the first cd but this is. to bury within the sound is THE indie/emo rock album to come out in 2000 and thats just that.

5.0 out of 5 stars TO BURY WITHIN THE SOUND, August 7, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: To Bury Within the Sound (Audio CD)
This is Engine Down's first full length follow-up to their EP "Under The Pretense of Present Tense". This new album however, transcends all prior musical releases by this band. In an attempt for personal and artistic growth, these four musicians have pushed themselves not only in their composition, and orchestration, but their development of lyrics and the almost eerie vocal conversations they seem to share. Their use of more classical instruments such as piano and cello, layered on top of the rhythm-driven rock, give a depth to the music not found in most other rock-and-roll bands. This record can make you want to cry one moment and in the next moment, jump out of your seat and dance like mad. Engine Down has found a way to channel every possible human emotion into an audible form. Quite amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME, September 23, 2003
By A Customer

This CD is awesome. Retread is the best song in the world. It's also one of those CD's you can listen to from start to finish and never change the track. I'd highly recommend it to anyone.
