Clinical Surrealism,

This review is from: Burying Sandwiches (Paperback)
On the surface a study of a girl with an eating disorder, this little book is one of the most visually compelling--what?--graphic novellas I have seen. Sato's art is reminiscent of past classics from Edward Gorey to YELLOW SUBMARINE without being slavishly similar to any of them. Great black and white line work, the precision of medical illustration when called for, lots of obsessive detail and surreal perspectives, all present a story that could conceivably been bathetic in suitably creepy ways. A lot of work went into the making of this story, and close examination is amply rewarded.
