Book Description

September 1, 2004
It is 1975. Boston is mired in the quagmire of court-ordered forced busing. Protest marches course through the streets daily. Children attend schools teeming with armed riot police. Angry mobs heckle students as they step off school buses. Snipers are staked out on school rooftops. This is daily life for the young people of Boston. A cautious attempt by Katie Flannery from Charlestown to start a dialogue with Jack Sinclair from Roxbury ignites already inflamed racial tensions and sets off a sequence of events that will change both their lives forever. This story will take you from the explosively integrated school hallways to the bloody street battles with police, from the drug dens of Roxbury to the stately homes surrounding Charlestowns soaring Bunker Hill monument. It will bring you back to the roiling anger and moral ambiguity that rocked Boston and the country during the tumult of the forced busing era. And it will deliver you intimately into the lives of these two families struggling desperately to survive it all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, November 26, 2004
This review is from: On the Bus (Paperback)
I loved this book. I couldn't put it down once I started reading it. This is the City of Boston; all of the good and all the bad. Kim Scott has written about the everyday people of Boston and in doing so she has captured the heart of this city.

5.0 out of 5 stars Closer than we think, February 23, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: On the Bus (Paperback)
Kimberly Scott has written a thought provoking story of two families, one black one white, living in Boston at a time of outward racial tensions and hatred. The story allows the reader to see that we are all closer than with think, sharing many common challenges in life, regardless of our race. Additionally, you are forced to see that all things are not equal for all people.
At the end of this book, you must review your own beliefs and past actions. Decide for yourself how you would act in similar circumstances and see if you could do the right thing (as the main character does).
