From the Author

Just the essentials for your EOS Rebel T2i
When a command card doesn't provide enough information, and a small camera guide has too much padding, pull this Compact Field Guide for your Canon T2i out of your camera bag and get the advice and recommendations you need quickly.

I don't believe you can have too much of a good thing, but readers who have been using my 400-page in-depth guide to master their Canon T2i have asked me to distill the most essential information into a portable field guide for on-the-go reference.  In the approximately 150 pages of this lay-flat, spiral-bound book, you'll find in-depth descriptions of every control, menu option, and capability of the Canon T2i.  Each choice is accompanied by my recommendations and a description of when you should or should not use a particular setting.  There are seven no-nonsense chapters:
  1. Quick Setup Guide.  You -- or someone you loan your T2i to -- can set up the key exposure, autofocus, and other settings in minutes with the step-by-step instructions in this chapter.
  2. Streetsmart Canon T2i Roadmap.  Can't recall what a particular button or dial does, or don't remember how to access bracketing or another feature you seldom use?  This chapter has photos of every control and a description of how to use it.
  3. Shooting and Playback Menu Settings. Command cards and cheat sheets provide a menu listing and a recap of the Shooting and Playback options.  This chapter explains how to use them, too.
  4. Setup and My Menu Settings. You may not use these menus quite as often, which is all the more reason to carry along my instructions on how to use them.
  5. Using Flash. Reference guide to working with the T2i's internal flash, and Canon's external units.
  6. Shooting Movies.  I've managed to squeeze in instructions on using the T2i's movie-making capabilities, along with tips on shooting better movies in the field.
  7. Shooting Tips. Pages and pages of tables listing Shooting Menu and Custom Setting Menu recommendations for a variety of situations, such as stage performances, long exposures, landscapes, and portraits.
I know many Canon T2i owners are buying both my "big book" and this Compact Field Guide, so they're equipped with the information they need whether at home or on-the-go.

Don't buy this book if you are satisfied with the Instruction Manual and Pocket Guide that came with your camera. Also, don't buy this book if what you really need is a book for beginning photographers. This field guide is not about learning photography.

What this book is, is a User's Guide that should have been included in the same box as the Camera. This is not to say that either of Canon's guides are worthless. I just believe that if people get this field guide they won't have much use for what Canon has provided.

Other reviewers have already covered the features of this great field guide. I can't think of anything to add. Just buy it. You will be glad you did.

This book is a concise and comprehensive guide for the camera bag. It is the perfect companion to the best camera I have ever owned. It is well organized for quick reference. It gives needed info without going into the detail of "why" which is not required when "in the field". I would recommend this field guide for beginners and professionals.

I actually have the larger T2I book by Busch and that is like a personal advisor to me, but of course it is too large to be carrying around. When I saw the small handboob advertised I fully expected a sort of "cook book" type manual where instructions were written out for various situations I might encounter. So obviously this was not what I had in mind and does not really meet my expectations. I guess it is best to stick with the larger Busch Manual to learn the camera and try to write your own guide or instructions to carry around.

This is the ticket. The little booklet that comes with the camera is okay, but the field guide is great. Has photos that relate to the functions of the camera. I highly recommend the field guide for what ever DSLR you may have.

I bought this field guide to carry in my camera bag. Lets face the facts modern cameras are essentially a small computer in your hands and as such they are very complex and have a lot of buttons and modes etc. Very few people are going to remember all the settings and how to get to them. the book excels at this with good photos of the settings and to a lessor degree why to use them. This book does what it was intended to do jog your memory on how to set up the camera for different conditions Aperture, shutter, iso, picture styles etc.Having said all this, when I bought this book I also bought David Busch's
Canon EOS Rebel T2i /550D guide to Digital SLR Photography book. This is a much more comprehensive book on the way this camera works in the various modes and settings. As a set these two books are unbeatable and will give you the confidence to try the different settings available to you to use. If you are a beginner they will get you taking pictures with confidence, and if you are experienced they have the information you are looking for. I can not say enough good things about these books but I feel strongly that they are at their best as a set.

An absolute must have for any serious (and not so serious) photographer. This book has nearly everything you want to know about the Canon T2i and is extremely well written. Worth every penny, I highly recommend it to any owner of the T2i.

This book is the perfect size to keep in my camera bag. It has good info and is easy to use. It has more information than the booklet that came with the camera. I like the spiral binding that allows the book to lay flat.

With more than 2 million books in print, David D. Busch is the world's #1 selling author of camera-specific guidebooks, and the originator of popular series like David Busch's Pro Secrets, David Busch's Compact Field Guides, David Busch's Guides to Digital SLR Photography, and David Busch's Quick Snap Guides.

Most of his hugely successful books for Nikon, Canon, Sony, Pentax, Olympus, and Panasonic digital cameras are the top-selling guidebooks for their respective camera models. His advice has been featured on NPR's "All Tech Considered."

Busch's dozens of other books devoted to digital photography include David Busch's Digital Infrared Pro Secrets and Mastering Digital SLR Photography. As a roving photojournalist for more than 20 years, he has illustrated his books, magazine articles, and newspaper reports with award-winning images. Busch has operated his own commercial studio, suffocated in formal dress while shooting weddings-for-hire, and shot sports for a daily newspaper and upstate New York college. His photographs and articles have been published in magazines as diverse as PhotoGraphic, Popular Photography & Imaging, The Rangefinder, The Professional Photographer, and hundreds of other publications. He's also reviewed digital cameras for CNet Networks and Computer Shopper.

As a writer, photographer, and contributing editor for ten magazines, he has more than 130 books and 2500 articles to his credit. A PR consultant for Eastman Kodak Company's photography divisions for nearly 20 years, Busch has published photography articles under his by-line in Popular Photography & Imaging, PhotoGraphic, The Rangefinder, The Professional Photographer and other photo magazines. His photos have appeared on the covers of magazines, and in both print and television advertising.

The graduate of Kent State University operated his own photo studio and was a principal in CCS/PR, Inc., one of the largest public relations firms based in San Diego, working on press conferences, press kits, media tours, and sponsored photo trade magazine articles. In addition to Kodak, CCS photography clients included Hewlett-Packard. He sold his interest in CCS in 1992 to become a full-time author, photographer, and reporter.

Since then, Busch has become one of the leading photojournalist/authors in the United States. He has had as many as five books appear simultaneously in the Amazon.com Top 25 Digital Photography Books, and when Michael Carr of About.com named the top five digital photography books for beginners, the #1 and #2 choices were his Digital Photography All-in-One Desk Reference for Dummies and Mastering Digital Photography. Several of his digital imaging books have sold in excess of 50,000 copies.
