From the Author

Just the essentials for your Sony Alpha SLT-A55/A35/A33
When a command card doesn't provide enough information, and a small camera guide has too much padding, pull this Compact Field Guide for your Sony Alpha SLT out of your camera bag and get the advice and recommendations you need quickly.

I don't believe you can have too much of a good thing, but readers who have been using my 400-page in-depth guides (individually tailored for each of these cameras) to master their Sony Alpha SLT have asked me to distill the most essential information into a portable field guide for on-the-go reference.  In the approximately 150 pages of this lay-flat, spiral-bound book, you'll find in-depth descriptions of every control, menu option, and capability of the SLT-A55, SLT-A35, and SLT-A33.  Each choice is accompanied by my recommendations and a description of when you should or should not use a particular setting.  There are six no-nonsense chapters:
  1. Quick Setup Guide.  You -- or someone you loan your SLT camera to -- can set up the key exposure, autofocus, and other settings in minutes with the step-by-step instructions in this chapter.
  2. Streetsmart Sony Alpha Roadmap. Can't recall what a particular button or dial does, or don't remember how to access bracketing or another feature you seldom use?  This chapter has photos of every control and a description of how to use it.
  3. Menu Settings. Command cards and cheat sheets provide a menu listing and a recap of each of the menu  options.  This chapter explains how to use them, too.
  4. Using Flash. Reference guide to working with the Sony Alpha's internal flash, and Sony's external units.
  5. Shooting Movies. I've managed to squeeze in instructions on using the Alpha's advanced movie-making capabilities, along with tips on shooting better movies in the field.
  6. Shooting Tips. Pages and pages of tables listing settings recommendations for a variety of situations, such as stage performances, long exposures, landscapes, and portraits.
I know many SLT owners are buying both my "big book" for their particular camera and this Compact Field Guide, which summarizes the operations of both, so they're equipped with the information they need whether at home or on-the-go. Sit down with me, and we can explore these great cameras together.  It's an exhilarating ride!

Based on the review of other purchasers I ordered a copy of David Busch's excellent book on the Sony A55/A33 along with my Sony A55. It was a great and useful choice. The book explains in plain english and in a well-organoized format anything a new user would want to know about digital photography using the Sony A55. I have owned 35mm single lens reflex cameras many years ago; more recently, I have owned several point and shoot digital cameras; and I consider myself an informed photographer. However, I have found David Busch's excellent book has been very useful to help me understand and use the many features of the Sony A55. As he points out, all the needed information is contained in the compact booklet that accompanies the A55, and that might be enough for a really skilled and knowledgeable photographer. However, the information in David Busch's book is organised and presented in a more useful and informative way for the casual or new DSLR user and I recommend purchasing his book along with your purchase of the Sony A55.

I purchased this field guide to supplement the author's Sony Alpha SLT-A55/A33 Guide to Digital Photography, which is absolutely necessary in order to fully understand all of the camera's "bells and whistles" and their proper uses. The tiny pictogram booklet provided by Sony is simply inadequate. It shows "what and where" but provides very little "why". David's book does all that and more, but it is a tad on the bulky side and won't fit in my camera bag. The Field Guide does. The dimensions listed are for the larger, more comprehensive book. The actual dimensions of the Field Guide are 8.1 X 5.75 inches. While not as comprehensive as the full book, it hits the high points and serves the role as reminder more than adequately, which is what field guides are supposed to do, and much better than the Sony provided booklet. The lay-flat spiral binding is a great feature. As long as the wind isn't blowing too hard, all you'll need in the field is a flat surface to put it on, and it will remain open to the page or pages you need, thus freeing your hands and allowing you to concentrate on photography. Indispensable, and a real bargain here at Amazon.

This book is a very clear and well illustrated field guide for all the functions of the Sony Alpha camera. The author studied the camera in great detail and brings this in depth knowledge to an easy to follow instructions manual for the camera. It was nice to learn about all the scene modes and additional features of the camera that are not as well outlined in the instruction manual. The author used many photos to illustrate the controls and showed the many different menus.

I have Busch's other full sized book for the A55, but this one that has all the basics in a smaller version that is spiral bond is much handier to fit in my camera bag. This is the one that travels with the camera to answer the questions I have along the way.

This book is a great addition to my camera.I am a Chef and I plan on using the camera to take pictures for a cookbook.I really like the size of the book and fact that it is spiral bound. The illustrations are great and I really like the color tabs on the page edges.
You can tell this book is designed to be used and not become a door stop.
Well worth the cost.

The field guide is the only book you should carry in your camera bag. I like it's easy step by step descriptions and is easy to follow. The fact that it lays flat is huge when you are trying to follow while holding the camera in one hand and the book in the other. This book is a must have.

This pocket guide keeps me on track with all of the needed information for my SLT-A33. I bought the camera used, and need to keep information alot closer at hand, because digital slr's are more complicated than the old manual ones. I was very pleased with the shots I took of a party. Lots of group, and head/shoulders shots. Not the first 'red eye'! Everyone says the photographs are superb!
