1. Quick Setup Guide. 2. Sony Alpha Roadmap. 3. Setting Up Your Sony Alpha SLT. 4. Using the Flash. 5. Shooting Movies. 6. Shooting Tips.

From the Author

Just the essentials for your Sony Alpha SLT-A77/A65
When a command card doesn't provide enough information, and a small camera guide has too much padding, pull this Compact Field Guide for your Sony Alpha SLT out of your camera bag and get the advice and recommendations you need quickly.

I don't believe you can have too much of a good thing, but readers who have been using my 400-page in-depth guides (individually tailored for each camera) to master their Sony Alpha SLT cameras have asked me to distill the most essential information into a portable field guide for on-the-go reference.  In the approximately 150 pages of this lay-flat, spiral-bound book, you'll find in-depth descriptions of every control, menu option, and capability of the SLT-A77 and SLT-A65.  Each choice is accompanied by my recommendations and a description of when you should or should not use a particular setting.  There are six no-nonsense chapters:
  1. Quick Setup Guide.  You -- or someone you loan your SLT camera to -- can set up the key exposure, autofocus, and other settings in minutes with the step-by-step instructions in this chapter.
  2. Streetsmart Sony Alpha Roadmap. Can't recall what a particular button or dial does, or don't remember how to access bracketing or another feature you seldom use?  This chapter has photos of every control and a description of how to use it.
  3. Menu Settings. Command cards and cheat sheets provide a menu listing and a recap of each of the menu  options.  This chapter explains how to use them, too.
  4. Using Flash. Reference guide to working with the Sony Alpha's internal flash, and Sony's external units.
  5. Shooting Movies. I've managed to squeeze in instructions on using the Alpha's advanced movie-making capabilities, along with tips on shooting better movies in the field.
  6. Shooting Tips. Pages and pages of tables listing settings recommendations for a variety of situations, such as stage performances, long exposures, landscapes, and portraits.
I know many SLT owners are buying both my "big book" for their particular camera and this Compact Field Guide, which summarizes the operations of both, so they're equipped with the information they need whether at home or on-the-go.  Sit down with me, and we can explore these great cameras together.  It's an exhilarating ride!

More About the Author

With more than 2 million books in print, David D. Busch is the world's #1 selling author of camera-specific guidebooks, and the originator of popular series like David Busch's Pro Secrets, David Busch's Compact Field Guides, David Busch's Guides to Digital SLR Photography, and David Busch's Quick Snap Guides.

Most of his hugely successful books for Nikon, Canon, Sony, Pentax, Olympus, and Panasonic digital cameras are the top-selling guidebooks for their respective camera models. His advice has been featured on NPR's "All Tech Considered."

Busch's dozens of other books devoted to digital photography include David Busch's Digital Infrared Pro Secrets and Mastering Digital SLR Photography. As a roving photojournalist for more than 20 years, he has illustrated his books, magazine articles, and newspaper reports with award-winning images. Busch has operated his own commercial studio, suffocated in formal dress while shooting weddings-for-hire, and shot sports for a daily newspaper and upstate New York college. His photographs and articles have been published in magazines as diverse as PhotoGraphic, Popular Photography & Imaging, The Rangefinder, The Professional Photographer, and hundreds of other publications. He's also reviewed digital cameras for CNet Networks and Computer Shopper.

As a writer, photographer, and contributing editor for ten magazines, he has more than 130 books and 2500 articles to his credit. A PR consultant for Eastman Kodak Company's photography divisions for nearly 20 years, Busch has published photography articles under his by-line in Popular Photography & Imaging, PhotoGraphic, The Rangefinder, The Professional Photographer and other photo magazines. His photos have appeared on the covers of magazines, and in both print and television advertising.

The graduate of Kent State University operated his own photo studio and was a principal in CCS/PR, Inc., one of the largest public relations firms based in San Diego, working on press conferences, press kits, media tours, and sponsored photo trade magazine articles. In addition to Kodak, CCS photography clients included Hewlett-Packard. He sold his interest in CCS in 1992 to become a full-time author, photographer, and reporter.

Since then, Busch has become one of the leading photojournalist/authors in the United States. He has had as many as five books appear simultaneously in the Amazon.com Top 25 Digital Photography Books, and when Michael Carr of About.com named the top five digital photography books for beginners, the #1 and #2 choices were his Digital Photography All-in-One Desk Reference for Dummies and Mastering Digital Photography. Several of his digital imaging books have sold in excess of 50,000 copies.

Busch was a featured guest speaking on digital photography on Toronto's Breakfast Television show in 2005, was the keynote speaker at the Dayton Computerfest, and has been a call-in guest for 22 different radio shows nationally and in major markets, including WTOP-AM (Washington), KYW-AM (Philadelphia), USA Network (Daybreak USA), WPHM-AM (Detroit), KMJE-FM (Sacramento), CJAD-AM (Montreal), WBIX-AM (Boston), ABC Radio Network (Jonathan & Mary Show).

We recently got the sony A77, it has so many bells and whistles I'm pretty lost. The camera actually tells you what it does, but sometimes I'm so lost I don't even know what to ask it. I bought the Sony field guide in an attempt to learn more about my camera. After researching and reading reviews of the several books out there, I ordered both David Busch's, this guide and the more in depth guide (which I haven't received yet).

I like that this guide is smaller and spiral bound, it will be perfect to carry in the car or my purse (my large purse) so I can take it with me and use it for quick reference. The pictures that go along with the text are incredibly helpful for a visual learner like me. I find the text to be simple to understand and the explanations clear and concise.

If I have one quibble with this book it's that I wish it was dedicated only to the A77. I sometimes find the "If you have the 65 this control is the ..., it's this control on the 77." the larger book I bought is dedicated to the A77.

Have been reading this book in the evening hours of my holiday in some interesting national parks here in the US. Where at day time I have been using my camera.

It goes so much further than the standard Sony manual. Great examples, great explanations.

And tons of room to put your own remarks and settings of the camera, so you can put things back to your preferences when you do a firmware upgrade for example.

Next to this book I also have the full version, which is also a must have from my point of view.

...Don't forget to make to put your remarks in this book, so it does remember for you what your preferred are !

I ordered my Sony a77 SLT and this book on the same day. Received the book yesterday. Still waiting on the camera. Read it from cover to cover last night. The information on Quick Setup and getting to know the camera and what it does is concise and simple but yet covers all the features the camera has to offer. He also gives tips on both shooting stills, using flash (both built-in and external) and recording video. I currently shoot the a350 so there are a lot of new features, including the video that I'm unfamiliar with. The information on the settings options along with advice on when/why to use or not to use is especially helpful The book is also a great size to include in my camera bag for quick references. I particularly like the spiral bound, lay flat format of the book.

The Sony SLT A77 is a complicated computer, and like all computers, they are complicated to use unless you have learned how it works. Digital photography is very different from the old sensitized material type: flash synchronization, bracketing, editing, etc. I am having a hard time figuring out how to use it so I bought this and the un-abridged edition of Busch's manual. Even so, it is difficult for me as I spent most of my 69 years with the old system. What I do with Busch's books is to look up only what I need to do when I need it. Otherwise, like other computers, I will forget most of what I learned if I do not use any feature. I have not even tried to take movies yet! For day-to-day photography, I need simple things like flash synchronization with slave units. Still cannot figure out how it is done with this camera unless we buy the expensive Sony dedicated flashes. The pictures I take on automatic settings are excellent and am coasting with that most of the time. I also have a remote shutter release.

An excellent quick guide for the A65, condensed from the full version. The meat is here, but less detail for portability.

I first purchased the full guide by Mr. Busch and wanted this as a travel copy while in Europe. It is an excellent, easy to read and use reference manual for the wonderful A65 camera. I found the size and the expert, succinct writing style to be a great assist in improving my use and knowledge of an excellent piece of photograpic equipment.

Perfect size, wire bound, and priced right. The cost justifies highlighting, dog-earing pages, etc. - and the information you're looking for is easily located and understood.
