Your mileage may vary..., January 2, 2008
This review is from: Earcheck Middle Ear Monitor
As a parent of a young child, it is sometimes difficult to know when a doctor visit is warranted. This is especially true with ear infections because the symptoms vary widely and are subtle. The child may run a fever or may not. They may have trouble sleeping, but there could be a hundred different reasons for that. Nobody wants to run to the doctor with every sniffle. However, the "wait and see" approach sometimes ends up with a child screaming in pain in the middle of the night. (Been there, done that, too many times.)
We have three young children. Unfortunately, one is prone to ear infections and often exhibits no symptoms until the infection is in full swing.
We bought this Earcheck device when it was brand new on the market, so we've been using ours for a couple of years.
There are a couple of things that I can share:
First, I think the accuracy of the results depends on the individual. One of our children seems to get pretty accurate readings. Another child does not. I speculate that this may have something to do with the specific characteristics of their ear canal.
Second, this only detects the presence of fluid, not actually infection. You can have fluid without an infection, but the presence of fluid is a definite red flag.
I'm giving this product three stars based on the variability of the results. If it works accurately for you or your child, then it is easy to use and gives quick and painless results. On the other hand, it doesn't work for everybody. Truly a "your mileage may vary" situation.
If ear infections are a concern, I highly recommend buying an otoscope as your first line of defense. (An otoscope is that little light the doctor uses to check your ears.) The Earcheck device can also be used as a supplement to the otoscope.

It Works!, January 11, 2007
We've had this for just over a year.
It's tricky to get your sick child to be quiet and still for 30 seconds. But, it does give accurate results! Our ped was amazed.
Unfortunately, it doesn't actually fix the problem. We still wound up with ear tubes!
