Book Description

March 2004
In this comprehensive critique of the George W. Bush administration's handling of international relations, Craig R. Eisendrath and Melvin A. Goodman, both senior fellows at the Center for International Policy, demonstrate the folly and the dangers of abandoning diplomacy and relying on military force as the chief means of conducting U.S. foreign policy.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A former CIA official (Goodman) and ex-diplomat (Eisendrath) team up to examine how, in their opinion, the Bush administration has rolled back over half a century of foreign policy accomplishments. Current policy relies on bullying with military force, they argue, as it rejects the broad collaborative approach in effect from the founding of the U.N. to the first President Bush's coalition against Saddam Hussein in the Gulf War. Although Eisendrath and Goodman see some potential for change in recent administrative appointments, they emphatically urge that more direct action toward multilateralism must be taken to restore America's reputation abroad and counter the centralization of power in the presidency to prevent deterioration of the domestic situation.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read, June 17, 2004

This review is from: Bush League Diplomacy: How the Neoconservatives Are Putting the World at Risk (Hardcover)
Anyone who cares about the future of American foreign policy, as well as how the US relates to the world community, should read this book.

The Neoconservatives currently running the US have rejected decades of diplomatic work to build the US as the leader among the nations of the world. In rejecting multilateral, diplomatic solutions to the problems of foreign policy, they have instead chosen a unilateristic approach dominated by the military.

This book clearly lays out why this has been a collosal mistake, how it's destroying the position of the US as a world leader, and how it's making the world a much less safer place as other countries move to defend themselves from potential "regime change".

Read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An important look at a flawed policy, April 13, 2004

This review is from: Bush League Diplomacy: How the Neoconservatives Are Putting the World at Risk (Hardcover)
Craig Eisendrath is a unique voice in the debate over the neo-imperialism of the Bush 43 Administration. He worked in the U.S. State Department during the Cold War, quitting in disgust over the lies that the U.S. was telling about the Soviet Union's nuclear capability to justify to the American people our aggressive posture and the enormous expense of beefing up our military. This unique historical perspective makes him a highly-informed observer of the current administration's efforts to throw dust in the public's eyes to justify its blindly hegemonical goals. He's been there and seen that, and is seeing it again. This is an important addition to the discussion about America's foreign policy in the new century.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cowboy politics, May 8, 2004
This review is from: Bush League Diplomacy: How the Neoconservatives Are Putting the World at Risk (Hardcover)
In almost every category the Bush administration seems to be involved in a srew-up resulting from arrogance mixed with muddleheadedness. This gang is radically disruptive and prepared to tear up even normal standards as political givens. This book recounts this brashness in the realm of foreign policy, and especially in the lead up to the Iraq war with the alienation of its own allies by this tough guy administration of PR imperialists.
