5.0 out of 5 stars Take back America send the drunks back to Crawford
Malachy McCourt and Michael Moore, both American-born Irishmen, share the outrage that a dry drunk from Texas is now the dangerous leader of the world's only superpower. Though a bit older (and more comely) than Mr. Moore, Malachy offers devastating evidence as to why George W. Bush should be denied re-election. Not only is Bush a drunk who never really sobered up...

1.0 out of 5 stars Riding his brother's coattails..
Reading Malachy McCourt puts me in mind of the musical Taylor family (singer/songwriters James, Alex, Livingston, Kate, et al): one sibling has exceptional talent, enjoys commercial and artisitic success and the other sibs try to "ride the wave". If it weren't for Brother Frank's brilliance, Malachy's work would very likely never see print. There's nothing really...

5.0 out of 5 stars Take back America send the drunks back to Crawford, July 19, 2004
This review is from: Bush Lies In State (Paperback)
Malachy McCourt and Michael Moore, both American-born Irishmen, share the outrage that a dry drunk from Texas is now the dangerous leader of the world's only superpower. Though a bit older (and more comely) than Mr. Moore, Malachy offers devastating evidence as to why George W. Bush should be denied re-election. Not only is Bush a drunk who never really sobered up (even if he no longer drinks), he is a religious zealot willing to inflict punishment on imagined enemies, even as Oliver Cromwell (a 17th Century Taliban) visited genocide on the tranquil Irish town of Drogheda, Ireland (on September 11, 1649, by an extraordinary coincidence).
Malachy's short, hard-hitting chapters gnaw away at Bush (and Cheney-Wolfoiwitz-Rumsfeld's) distortions and prevarications, and emphasize why regime change is necessary in November's elections. This book is a must!

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and well-written, August 26, 2004

Bush fans, take heed: this left-wing portrayal of our president will probably not dissuade you from voting for him. For those who oppose Bush, this book preaches to the choir in a colorful and humorous way. Caustic and satirical of the current leadership, this book reads like a cross between a novel and a comic strip, mixing fact and fiction with a paintbrush.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than Bill's speech!, July 27, 2004
By
This review is from: Bush Lies In State (Paperback)

Malachy McCourt delivers the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about our (quote)future-former president(end quote). While the writing is McCourt-style humor, the message is no nonsense. All take heed! Make all your Republican friends read this book for their own good, and the good of America!

There's nothing really imaginative or informative within these rants, and more coherent and convincing arguments regarding Bush's shortcomings have been made elsewhere. My suggestion: save your money, buy whatever Frank writes next.

1.0 out of 5 stars There Are Much Better Books Critical of Bush, May 26, 2005
This review is from: Bush Lies In State (Paperback)
I do like Malachy McCourt a lot and I might add too, that it was a pleasure seeing him again and meeting his friend - and fellow Stuyvesant High School alumnus - Charles L. DeFanti at an outdoor display where Malachy was selling copies of this book last October at the annual "New York is Book Country" street fair. However, I strongly disagree with the opinions expressed by both Malachy and Charles in their Amazon.com reviews written below. If you are an ardent critic of President George W. Bush there are other, more astute - and better written - books critical of him than "Bush Lies In State". Alas I can't think of any, except for David Corn's "The Lies of George W. Bush: Mastering the Politics of Deception" which is also offered for sale here at Amazon.com (David Corn is the Washington editor of The Nation magazine.).

"Bush Lies In State" is a thin tome of ad hominim attacks on President Bush that were published originally in several Manhattan newspapers, most notably "Our Town" and the "West Side Spirit". I have had the pleasure of writing some very critical letters of some of these columns that were published in both newspapers, putting a comical satirical spin on some of Malachy's worst prose, by mentioning Malachy's latest adventures as a former Bajoran terrorist aboard the starship USS Limerick in a potential television series "Star Trek: The McCourt Factor". The Limerick's ongoing mission is "to seek out new life, new civilizations and to boldy go where no Irish have gone before" (EDITORIAL NOTE: For diehard Trekkies and McCourties, the USS Limerick is a substantially upgraded Miranda-class starship still in service in the late 24th Century; her commanding officer, Captain Francis "Frankie" McCourt, was once an aide of Admiral Nyota Uhura, Chief of Starfleet Intelligence.). Judging from the inept critical and literary quality of Malachy's critical commentary of George W. Bush, it seems that Malachy should consider asking Paramount Pictures to revive the "Star Trek" franchise via this new "Star Trek" series which I have proposed (I have already an idea of an episode where Malachy's character teaches Irish stepdancing to some belligerent Klingons.). It would be a far more valuable use of his time than writing more of these rather unenlightening criticisms of President George W. Bush. However, if you are truly a fan of Malachy McCourt's prose, then I would recommend reading his memoir "Singing My Him Song" or taking a look at his relatively new history of Ireland, instead of purchasing this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars I was looking for good old fashioned, November 5, 2004

Bush-bashing, and found this one to be quite flat-footed. After page 10 I was like "OK, I get it, what else?"

Also, the comments below, credited to the author, in response to a bad review, are kinda creepy. I mean, if McCourt is gonna dish it out he ought to be able to take it too, right?

If we have to either laugh or cry, it's better to laugh, and what better [...] of our laughter than the worst president ever? Unlike the serious tone of David Corn's excellent The Lies of George W. Bush, BUSH LIES IN STATE is more reminiscent of Molly Ivans' Bushwhacked: Life in George W. Bush's America and Shrub : The Short but Happy Political Life of George W. Bush, both of which also rate 5 stars.

You may learn a bit from BUSH LIES IN STATE; (many a true word is written in jest) but the main reason for reading it is to enjoy Malachy McCourt's wonderful sense of humor.

As usual, Malachy McCourt tells it like it is--he doesn't worry about the Bushies poisoning his Irish stew. For anyone who has doubts about which lever to pull in November...well, just read this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money, November 28, 2005
This review is from: Bush Lies In State (Paperback)
This McCourt Brother is not a good writer. His style is tedious and he has nothing new to say. Don't waste your money on this one-go to the library. I am sure there will be copies available.
