Grade 5 Up-- An excellent anthropology series on a variety of primitive peoples whose traditional lifestyles and habitats are now endangered. For some, like the Bushmen and the Maori, settlement and appropriation of their lands by outsiders has endangered the traditional ways, as has the lure of modern conveniences. Each volume is written by a different author with a special expertise on the country or culture: members of the ethnic group or social scientists who have studied and lived with the people. Each book describes the traditional lifestyle of the group, its history, culture, religion, and the adaptations that it has made for survival in the modern world. Each book has color photos, historical prints, and maps to illustrate and expand the text. The texts are lively, readable, and all written within the same reading and comprehension levels. Students will find these books useful for reports, and children who are curious about primitive peoples will find them a fascinating passport to very different cultures which may not long survive.
