I recently used this little unit to help me get into a particular spot in the middle of nowhere in the badlands of South Dakota, hours before dawn, and it worked amazingly well!!! I was not too familiar with it before hand but it was easy to master and understand. Very much worth the modest price. Great little device. Amazing little gadget. Worked great for me. Chris T.

I recently used the Bushnell Backtrack during a lengthy trip through urban and rural parts of Southeast Asia. It works, but it is not nearly as accurate as most car or mobile phone GPS units and it locates slowly. The Backtrack needs to be still and requires a clear, unobstructed view of the sky to locate itself. To get it to work, I'd set it down on the ground and wait for about five minutes. It cannot locate itself between tall buildings or under trees, so in cities and forests, this could only be done in parks or clearings. After it locates it operates well, but it auto shuts off after about 15 minutes to avoid draining the battery and has to locate itself over again when you turn it on. It prevented me from getting totally lost, but I found myself using the digital compass more often than the GPS. The GPS is helpful as a back-up, but impractical for orienteering or navigation.

This piece is perfect for those who get lost in parking lots, unfamiliar places, etc. It is also good for hiking but you need to insure you have some type of reception as it still qualifies as a GPS unit without all the maps and relies on satellite signals to get you from point B back to point A, where you started. Overall, a useful item that is light, and easy to use.
