This is a "see in the dark via IR" device. What this means is that the "wide field of vision" as advertised is only a feature in lighted and low light conditions. In dark conditions you will only see what the IR beam hits, which is somewhat narrow. In other words this does not work the same as some of the night ops stuff I used to use in my past life that provided a pretty big viewing area. This takes a little getting used to because you will have to reacquire an identification of each "item" you look at when used in total dark. The device may also need to be refocused if the distance is noticeably different from the last "item" observed. The IR beam is adjustable which gives you distance vs clarity based on your needs.

This is not a heat sensing device, so the IR beam must strike the intended item to be viewed in full dark conditions. The IR beam produces a small forward directed red light that can be detected if aimed directly at a subject's face. In low light conditions there is no forward light that I could detect. There is a small amount of white light that spills backwards out of the lens should the device be moved away from the eye in both low light and full dark. This may be enough to call attention to the user, but probably not in most situations.

Refocusing the device and adjusting the IR strength are super easy one touch functions.

The digital color is also pretty much only for lighted conditions. It looks very similar to looking through a camcorder view finder. What you get in the dark is best described as a very faded color to black and white (rather than glow green) image. The device has a two step focus system 1) eye lens focus, and 2) a primary wheel on the unit body.

This is as it seems, a entry level night vision product. However, it does work very well for the price. Black and white night vision with no digital lag, color screen with more ambient light. I ended up purchasing a 3 watt IR flashlight from Cree, the WF501B, for about $18. The IR on the monocular is really not strong enough and only gives you a small circle of view. The flashlight turned this from an okay product to an awesome product. No, it isn't really very tactical but you can sure see what is going on out to 100yds! Stock up on your cr123 batteries!
