5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent quality, economical buy
The NatureView 8 x 42 Roof Prism Binoculars are an incredibly good pair of binoculars. I searched around and compared the specifications of several Bushnell binos and I decided on these. I couldn't be happier with my choice. The field of view (330' @ 100 yrds)is perfect for birding, making it easy to follow a bird as it flies from perch to perch. The color optics are...

The color optics are amazing, as I've never seen the plumage so clearly before. This binocular in particular is nicely streamlined on account of the roof prisms, not bulky like the NatureView Plus 8 x 42. I highly recommend purchasing these great binoculars.

We had purchased a pair of these Bushnell binoculars last year for my use, and we enjoyed them so much, that we decided to get the same model for my wife. The optics are excellent and the eye relief level is great for those who wear eyeglasses. The only complaint is that the objective lens caps won't stay on. However, a quick call to Bushnell and they'll send a free replacement pair, which work much better.

Great Beginners binocular for those wanting to get into birding. A quality product if you can't afford the more superior brands out there. I wasn't disappointed with these. They worked well at night too. Will work great for sporting events or concerts too. These aren't small binoculars so if you are looking for something you can throw in a pocket, pick another option. I upgraded to a Vortex binocular but still use these as my backup binocular.

I bought these for myself as a birthday present last year and it's one of the best things I have ever done. I am a photographer and a bird watcher, so my need for good optics is important to me. I went to the Audubon site and found their reviews of hundreds of binoculars. After checking out quite a few in my price range and above, I settled on these that compared favorably to ones that were about $100 more expensive. A few weeks after I got them, I was visiting family and one of the cousins works for the forestry service. He had similar binocs that cost over $125 more and the Bushnell's matched the quality and durability in every way.

The ease of using them is wonderful and they have eye cups that accommodate glasses. I've used them both ways with no problems. The clarity is magnificent and the focusing is smooth and easy. One eye is slightly different than the other for me, so adjusting them is also very easy. 8 x 42 is just the right size for following flying birds or scanning. The waterproofing and fog cutting also are terrific. Everything about these is great!

Excellent value. These are the best binoculars I have ever used for under $200. The are easy to use and the image quality is crisp and clear. They are a little bulky for small children.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good starter binocs...but this is not for me, February 14, 2012

I am new to the world of binoculars. I've used them in the military, but I puchased these for the sole purpose of birding and travel. I've been reading a lot of reviews and doing quite a bit of research on a good, all-around quality pair of binoculars. My budget is up to $300.

I had a good feeling about these Bushnell binocs based on the reviews, so I purchased them.

Well, either my expectations were a bit too high, or perhaps my experience with good quality photography lenses have left me unsatisfied.

First off, don't get me wrong this reviw. These are a great pair of binocs. The glass is nice and clear, the armor feels fine (albeit a little too 'plastic' feeling), and the brightness is excellent.

Now, with that said, I was hoping better quality in the following areas:

1. color
2. control of chromatic aberration
3. compactness

Color - the color is somewhat natural, and a tad yellow and warm(which is common with most coated lenses), but overall, the image is a bit flat. Contrast and punch across the color spectrum is a bit lacking. The overall feeling of color is more two-dimensional and slightly muddy. Honestly, it is quite acceptable, but again, I was hoping for a but more.

Chromatic aberration -is somewhat evident. After observing buildings, trees and people from a 6 story building, almost all images have a strong blue-purple chromatic aberration covering any object that is being hit by the sunlight. I was surprised by this, as I have not read anything about such artifacts in the Amazon user reviews. This is something that I was hoping to avoid...

Compactness - although I had an idea of the dimensions and weight of these Bushnells from the specifications, I was unfortunately not very happy with the larger size. The weight felt great though. So readers, please be aware of the dimensions on these binoculars. They may not fit your preference.

With that said, I do think they are an amazing buy for the amount of quality you are getting. For me, I am needing a bit more 'oomph' and performance in IQ.

I will be returning these, but I just purchased a pair of Vanguard 8x42 Spirit ED. These are the binocs I originally wanted, but couldn't justify the price. I will update if this trade off was worth it.

After doing much research on line and at the library, after talking to people at Bushnell and after talking to binocular sales people in various places, we opted for the Bushnell NatureView 8x42 Roof Prism binocular. We have not been disappointed as they are exactly what we wanted. We were also looking at the 10x42mm NatureView and thankfully we chose the 8x42. The depth of field and the range, the closeup and the clarity are exactly what we want for observing birds and mammals near our house. The clincher in the choice was reading reviews on the ornithology sites on the internet.

I was looking for some binoculars for bird watching without spending too much. We've used these for local bird watching and on vacation. A really good bang-for-the-buck.
