Struggles with smaller objects,
This review is from: Bushnell Velocity Speed Gun (Colors may vary) (Electronics)
I bought this to measure two things basically: tennis and baseball velocity. After testing the gun at first just on some cars, I was excited because it was extremely accurate. However, once I went to measure baseball pitching velocity and tennis, it was consistently 15-20 mph slow. The baseball pitcher was throwing in the mid to upper 80s, and has been verified by a JUGS gun, and he was topping out on this gun at 73. I wanted this to work so badly because it is a great price, but I believe I will have to return it because it has not been accurate for me on what I wanted it for.

I am 100% happy with my Bushnell radar gun. I mainly bought it for use in motor sports, four wheeler racing, motorcycles, and various activities involving speed. It uses K band so that is a big improvement from X band. The range on this thing is totally unreal, I can catch someones speed from over a 1/4 mile away, pretty amazing. Bottom line, for this price it is an unbeatable buy compared to the $900 stalker guns. I love this thing!!

Durable. Tracks mph and gives you a reading of top speed. Seems to be accurate. Reads the same mph as my zooka pitching machine.
Takes 2 c batteries and they are still going strong after a month (probably over 500 readings). Great for kids and adults. Reads speed of ball coming toward you or away from you so you can use this with 1 person or 2. Recently brought this to a pool party and the adults had more fun with it than the kids.

Recently i purchased a Bushnell Velocity Speed Gun to test out it's accuracy. I have been in law enforcement since 1985 & i am certified in the use of radar.I read several reviews from customers on how they were dissatisfied beacause their radar gun did not work properly for one reason or another. My partners patrol car has a MPH radar & i decided to see just how accurate a Bushnell hand radar compared with it.I have 2 different speed tuning forks to test my MPH with & tested both of them on the Bushnell as well. The Bushnell tested accurate & gave the correct reading on both tuning forks i tested with.i then took it on the road & compared it against my partners MPH radar system against oncoming traffic & it worked as well matching vehicle speed with my MPH as well.
Although i used it on traffic,it should work on any moving object such as baseball, softball, tennis balls etc.Just remember that these objects are of course much smaller than a vehicle & you must be in direct line of sight to the object to get a true & accurate reading of speed.I would reccomend this particular unit to anyone interested in purchasing one. A Kid's Review
This review is from: Bushnell Velocity Speed Gun (Colors may vary) (Electronics)
Yes, yes, I know I am not a kid. I'm a dad.
My son was having trouble with getting his velocity up in his pitching. He had fine movement and location on his pitches. The term "mph" is what he loves to know about. So I bought this as a motavation tool. At first, he was throwing 52-56 mph, topping out at 58. After putting the gun on him, he didn't like the results. I said "OK, then, let's work to get it up to 63". He did, and beyond that. Soon 63-65. Then 67-70. Now he's throwing 70-73 at age 13. Also, he began working on a changeup a little while ago and he's got it down to a 10-12 mph difference according to this gun. This is an affordable gun, while it seems a little slow about 2-3 mph(we went to a Giants game a few years ago and threw 68 on an expensive gun), it still works. Also, to all you who say that using a gun on a young player is bad, it is not if you stress strikes and mechanics and not overthrowing. Hoever, I highly recomend this gun to LL coaches and pony League coaches.

Having read the reviews, and realizing that they were somewhat mixed, I took a chance on this gun for my kid. The price was irresistible. After about 6 weeks, we're completely satisfied. You do need to read the instructions...mainly about the need to measure the ball as it's coming towards you. If you measure from the side, you will get the wrong (low) reading. I hold the gun in one hand and catch my son's pitches with the other. Works great...and extremely accurate. Or should I say that it's extremely CONSISTENT? Through exercise, practice and work on mechanics, my (just turned 12 year old) son has increased his measured velocity from around 50MPH to 54MPH, in one mile per hour increments as you'd expect. The gun rarely misses a reading (make sure you hold the trigger down for the whole pitch) and the resulting number is always close to what I would predict from observation. (In other words, the change up really does clock in about 5MPH slower than the fast ball. And, yes, when the fastball's popping, the gun's confirming the higher speeds.) Overall, I'm very satisfied. We only use the gun once every 6 or so practices, but at almost every one of those sessions, my son has hit a new personal best. That's super encouraging and motivating for both of us! I have read that the gun may read low vs. Juggs. Since we're not comparing to any "goal" number or any other gun, that doesn't really matter too much to us. The idea here isn't to end up with a big number we can brag about...it's to improve. In that respect the gun is well worth the $75 or so we paid for it!!!

Our Speed gun,
By jolyon (Winter Park Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bushnell Velocity Speed Gun (Colors may vary) (Electronics)
The microwave speed gun , liked by the owners and users, and often disliked by speeders, has become another appliance. At short range, it reads runners and walkers and projectiles quite well. Looking thru front or rear vehicle windows gives very accurate own speed, and can see oncoming relative speed as well. The usual caution must be observed. ONLY ONE moving subject,or lots of confusion in the circuitry.
Aside; When these devices look at each other, they are both blind. The instructions confirm this. " Semantics; Although the word "radar" is used to describe this "Doppler speed gun", A real RADAR* tells distance as well as velocity. Decorations: I would have liked a little "tuning fork" to check the speed accuracy. * RADAR= RAdio Distance And Ranging. Jolyon

For the price this isn't a real bad deal. Battery life is very good. Range is OK, As long as you're not looking at too small an object and can stand close to the line of flight it it works fine. The only drawback is that it automatically shuts off after a few minutes, and you may miss something unless you keep looking at whether it's on. The readout could also be brighter as it's difficult to read in bright sun. It would be nice to have a way to plug it into the cigarette lighter of a car for recharging or use but I guess that's one of the reasons it's as inexpensive as it is.
Overall, I think that it's a good deal for the price. |
