Book Description

August 30, 2004
George W. Bush came into office only after a bitterly contested election result, but has since proceeded to establish himself as one of the most powerful, and one of the most arrogant, of all American presidents. He has involved the USA in the invasion of two Islamic countries, seems determined to impose global American hegemony, and has launched a 'war on terror' which risks perpetuating an unremitting state of crisis. And yet the sources of this enormous power are still shrouded in mystery. He relies on fanatical ideologues, fundamentalist Christians, shady businessmen and right-wing extremists to a degree that will surprise even the most hardened observer.

This up-to-the-minute expose, by the celebrated French reporter Eric Laurent - a specialist in world affairs and the author of the best-selling Bush's War - provides a scrupulously researched and at times deeply alarming account of a President who risks definitively alienating America from the rest of the world.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Only Christians have their place in paradise, explained George W. to his own mother. If it is populated by people like him, then after reading this book one would rather go to hell."

Le Canard enchaîné

"The rise of the one-time alcoholic and business failure is fascinating reading."

Defence Focus

"In this scrupulously researched book based on a wealth of documents, the current President of the United States comes across as nothing other than a man under the influence."

France Soir

"What is new about Eric Laurent's book is that he puts names to the faces of those who haunt the corridors of the White House and lays bare the machinations that were set in motion more than thirty years ago, in the days following the Vietnam War, by certain multimilllionares who wanted to see the United States stripped of its image as a modern and open country and returned to an almost surrealist orthodox morality."

5.0 out of 5 stars The President: A man 'under the influence' of ..., September 26, 2004
This review is from: Bush's Secret World: Religion, Big Business and Hidden Networks (Paperback)
This book should be read, at least once, by every man, woman and child in America who want to acquire some background information on the influences that are currently shaping the policies of the US Government (under George W. Bush's watch) and thus the perception of America throughout the world. Eric Laurent's book is a fascinating read, and one that is always backed up with easily checkable facts for further investigation, on all the individuals who influence the Bush political machine and therefore the ultimate destiny of America. All the reader needs to do is join up the dots of the activities of Richard Mellon Scaife's Heritage Foundation, with the soundbites and reports from the Coors Foundation, Bradley Foundation, Hoover Institute, Cato Institute and the American Enterprise Institute, to realise they are all singing of the same 'hymn sheet'. And singing in one voice. And singing very, very loudley. Once the dots of the 'hymn sheet' have all been joined together, the reader, through Laurent's indepth research and precise analysis, is able to hear the main vocalists in the 'chior'; Elliot Abrams, Douglas Feith, Richard Perle, Paul Wolfowitz, Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney. And these 'chiorboys' do not sing with the voice of angels, no matter what Billy Graham's Christian faith would have the listner believe. If you are a Patriot, read this book as a matter of urgency, whether you intend to vote for Bush or not.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bloodcurdling, September 25, 2004

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Bush's Secret World: Religion, Big Business and Hidden Networks (Paperback)
Once again, the thought that the power behind the throne ruled the biggest empire on Earth is proven. Since the beginning of the Bush administration, his government have being plagued with suspicious acusations of corruption, mismanagment, manipulation of information and public opinion, cuts in taxes, public programs and expenses and increising of military expenses with suspicious objectives but with clear consequences in a near future.

Mr. Laurent revealed the nexus between the Bush family and the oil business and how his family have being supported for generations by the republican extremists to gain control of the government and how they paid then back once instaled at White House. The list of the supporters goes from president of "prestigious" foundations, religious leaders, president of oil companies to the owners of the military industrial companies paid back with billionary contracts, loans, credits or strategic positions inside the administration to rule the destiny of United States and the rest of the world. Dangerous? Perhaps. Consequences? Many, a lot not even seeing, Irak as an example is enough to think about.
