Getting Down to Business with Art,
By
This review is from: Business of Art: An Artist's Guide to Profitable Self-Employment (Paperback)
The Business of Art, An Artist's Guide to Profitable Self Employment is the equivalent of a game winning grand-slam home run in the World Series.
Authors, Phil Borden, Debra S. Esparza, D. Jean Hester, Nancy Hytone Leb, Hope Tschopik Schneider, Greg Victoroff and Judith Luther Wilder, have written an extremely useful book of concepts, plans, blueprints, maps and financial statements for anyone who wishes to pursue a career in the arts or creative professions. Like many classics, The Business of Art is both simple and complex. Written in a direct, straightforward style, it is explicit in its illustrations, exercises and advice for those just starting out as it addresses Career and Business Planning or Legal Issues for Artists. At the same time it is implicit, subtle and wise in its advice for veterans of the art world in discussing Marketing and Promotion, Budgeting and Money Management or the Financing of Creative Work. It is relevant to emerging and seasoned artists, managers and cultural entrepreneurs and anyone in the middle. It speaks to dancers, musicians, actors, visual artists and creators in all media and disciplines. It is a book I wish I had read while an art major in college and every few years since. I recently taught two classes to senior studio art and media majors at CSU Northridge and passed around my copy for the students to review during my lecture. Judging from the number of people who wrote down CCI's contact information, I anticipate several new orders for The Business of Art coming from those sessions. In fact, I think the Business of Art should be mandatory reading for all college students in creative majors. (It would probably be a good read for undergraduate business majors as well). As a visual arts professional who has been a student, curator, student, administrator executive director, board member, board president, entrepreneur, consultant, student and appraiser over a forty-year career, I am singularly impressed with the practical knowledge and wisdom contained in this volume. I recommend it highly. Patrick H. Ela, AM Accredited Member American Society of Appraisers |
