the book Business Data Communication and Networking is a good book for people that is getting into networking. People will probably learn the basic skills to be a network manager, how the information travel in a network, and many more interesting subjects about networking.
I will recommend this book for people that is beginning into the field of networking because the terms that the book uses is easy to understand.

The business data communications and networking book is very to read and understand. The bold and italicized writing makes it easier to comprehend the communication being presented. The information is up to date and I'd recommend this book to anyone who requires a clear understanding of business data communications and networking

Almost, but not quite there.....,

I purchased this book for a class I was taking. It was the required text for the class. I have 15 years experience in network design and administration and recently returned to school to earn a second degree. I found this text to be overly technical for its intended audience, and would not recommend it to any instructor. Also the accompanying test bank from which an instructor can pull quiz/test questions are absolutely horrible and only serve to confuse students trying to learn.

Most of the Hands-On activities no longer work. We use them for course homework and lots of the links are just dead now and most things aren't compatible with Windows 7. They are still, however, good homework assignments as I've learned a lot. You just have to find your own versions of the software for a lot of these things and figure out how to do the same tasks on your own.The chapter readings are just alright as well. The information is very thorough, and accurate for the most part. There are several circumstances where my professor (who worked in the field for a lot longer than these guys I guess) just told us things in the book were plain wrong. Also some of the formulas are expressed in the book in ways that just don't make sense. Sure they work, but the units are all different and require conversions of typical units found in real life today. I'd get the book because you need it for class, but if you can encourage your professor to choose a different book there are definitely others out there that are either cheaper because they are an older edition (and likely still just as effective as this seemingly out-of-date book) or others that are updated and the same price.

Overall very informative and well-organized. Good post-course reference material.
They reordered the question numbers so older editions may not help much for class (I ran into trouble because I bought the 8th edition).

I was very dissapointed in this book. It seems to get a new revision every 2 years or less, which is fine for a networking book. After all, the field of networking changes quickly. However, there were many errors in the book. Had they been typos in areas that were recently updated, that would be understandable. But these were errors in the "history" section of the book. By the 10th! edition you should have that much figured out. The history hasn't changed. Furthermore, despite frequent reprinting, the book does not appear to be very current. It still talks about thin-net cable as if it is moderatly mainstream. It seems to suggest that fiber may someday actually become a common medium, and we might see gigabit over copper become popular. This is all pretty old hat! It makes 1.5 mb DSL seem like a miracle. Overall, not a bad book, but if they are going to kill the used market by reprinting every 2 years, then they owe it to their customers to actually update the book.

The book is excellent from an introductory stand point. It is easy to understand. I enjoy reading it because it explains each key point very well. The questions at the end of the chapter are excellent approach to review what the chapter is all about.

This book is must read for any networking/data communications amateur and specialist! I thought it was very expensive and only bought it because it is a required text for a course in Data Communications that I am pursuing. Having read it, I am not disappointed.
It is written in a language that makes it easy to understand. There are lots of exercises, case studies and hands and labs that help to reinforce the knowledge. Excellent book! |
