5.0 out of 5 stars Great Insights May 25, 2013
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
The authors, one of which is CEO of a company that does gamification for a living, make an exceptionally persuasive case that this approach - essentially to make a game, or include game like elements, into the customer or employee experience to promote and encourage engagement. While there are some Dummies books that read more like an advertisement for the author's business than a thought leading book, this isn't one of them. The approach is very general, the overview at a level that a non-technical professional will understand, and while the examples and screenshots are often from the author's own company, there is very little touting done in the book.

The concept of gamification is one that I was only recently introduced to by a business partner who had utilized the approach to drive engagement levels for his customer base to unprecedented levels in our industry. The discussion we had, and the results he was obtaining led me to explore this approach - right when this book was being released. The book made the entire concept make sense, and walks through case studies and examples of 6 strategies that can be adapted to most business use cases. Reading the book, one immediately can understand the process and the power of the approach in the 21st century.

The authors also provide a great follow on reading list in the "Part of 10's" that immediately saw me jump on this site to buy a few of. This was enough of a spark that it led me to email our product and engineering teams on a holiday weekend and encourage them to dig into this concept and read this book.

If you have an employee or a customer, are responsible for a process or a sale, this book needs to be read. The path to the future is here - in this book. The writing itself may not be the best I have ever read, but the message certainly was a call to action. Buy it. Read it.

So you have a website, you are into social media. What do you need to do next when you want to drive engagement? Read this book. I thought this book was so valuable in trying describing multiple methods of evaluating your audience and then striving to get them engaged. Is this the book the complete authority? No. I promise it is the book that will help you start the process. Written in a very readable style this book will show you how to grow your audience, and more importantly begin to engage them.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is your user engagement bible! February 26, 2013
Format:Paperback
Business Gamification for Dummies is your user engagement bible! This book is chockfull with basic gamification concepts and training, a step-by-step guide to identify your business goals, followed by real-world examples, and so much more. What I love about this book is you don't have to read it beginning to end, but can use it as a reference along your journey to implementing your engagement program.

As a community professional, I'm particulariy excited about chapters 3 & 4. These chapters go in to great depth about exploring and identifying your business objectives and aligning those objectives with the key behaviors you want to drive. This is a critical phase in developing a successful engagement program. Knowledge is power!

4.0 out of 5 stars Like a box of chocolates ... May 7, 2013
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
The Bottom Line Up Front is that this is a fine book and a good introduction to topic. it made me want to read other books by Mr. Duggan on Gamification. The Dummies' Guides series is a well established, highly successful franchise for good reasons.

The format is funny and invites readers to explore the basics shamelessly.

The format guarantees that some aspects will be covered, and others are harder to plug in.

It was clear that Mr. Duggan is an expert and has a lot to share. The format of a Dummies' Guide meant that basic terminology and ground theory is covered, but, like oil painting or warfare, Gamification has some science, but there is more art than hard numbers.

The author tried to add some of the back and forth, learning by examples, etc., but the series format doesn't work as well with that approach. On the other hand, the Dummies' Guides on statistics, geometry, plumbing, etc. are perfect fits.

I highly recommend this book as a first step in understanding Gamification.

If you're going to apply Gamification in your organization then this book will probably serve you best as the first in several books on the path to mastery.

The section on further resources and reading has some great recommendations.

In service,

Rich

I have a love-hate relationship with the Dummies books. I like the idea of a simple presentation style aimed at beginners. I don't like the lame humor attempts and outdated branding style. The Gamification book keeps a lot of the silly fluff to a minimum, though.

This one's pretty actionable and packed with good ideas for bringing gaming ideas to businesses. It goes beyond the beginner mode, which is a good thing. More of the Dummies books should take their cues from this text.

NOTE: It's more customer-oriented than employee-related - how to find and retain clients/patrons.

RECOMMENDATION: If you have a real world business or an internet shop, this is highly useful information. I know I go out of my way to shop at places that value my loyalty in tangible ways. People like being rewarded and recognized. I think gamification is only going to become more important in a poor economy. Well recommended.
