2.0 out of 5 stars Repetitive and just plain awful, February 15, 2008
By
Justin (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews
This book is a stain on an otherwise solid line-up from McGraw Hill (never mind the usurious prices they charge for their products).

While it raises interesting issues and perspectives on business' role in society, to what extent government is supposed to regulate business, and ethical dilemmas, there is so much overlap of concepts between chapters that it's hard to categorize the information. The lack of clear distinction between concepts makes this book like a mess of 19 chapters that spilled all over each other when they weren't supposed to. Many a time I've finished a chapter and thought to myself, "Didn't I just read a near carbon-copy of that in the previous chapter? Did I learn anything new from this chapter?"

Also, some of the "models" and "frameworks" the book uses to make sense of business-government-society interactions are so ridiculous and contrived. Many of the components tossed into these models seem arbitrarily categorized... as if they could fit into several other categories, as well.

What a piece of garbage this book is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very well-written, up to date & correct, December 16, 2011
As a business student, I know that a lot of books focusing on corporate ethics and CSR tend to be fairly biased against business. This books is different, because the authors always contrast different viewpoints and go to great lengths to underline the good impact that business has on society. The books is also extremely well-written and includes case studies on very recent events. The authors also know what they are talking about, when they talk about fields such as finance (something you do not find very often in politics books).

1.0 out of 5 stars This has to be the worst textbook ever published., September 7, 2011
I have one word to describe this book:
Pretentious.
It is my understanding that textbooks are meant to be unbiased learning aids. This is ~600 pages of the authors opinions on major corporations. There is nothing to be learned from this text. I am appalled that this is even allowed in public colleges.
