Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Business management professor Scully dissects big league baseball--its rules, player contracts, franchises, and tax accounting. Scully comments strongly on free agency, profitability, team performance, and racial discrimination. He concludes that blacks are mostly outfielders; Earl Weaver was the most effective manager; and teams are more profitable than is generally admitted. This is more detailed and baseball oriented than Joseph Durso's The All-American Dollar (LJ 3/1/72. o.p.) and John Underwood's Spoiled Sport ( LJ 11/15/84. o.p.), but heavy use of mathematics and statistical analysis make it more suitable for academic and research collections than for popular reading ones.

4.0 out of 5 stars Oh, Academics, November 11, 2010
This review is from: The Business of Major League Baseball (Hardcover)
Wonderful book, but it's always embarassing for an academic writer when you refer to Wade Boggs as "Wayne" Boggs, like Scully does on page 164.
